Yesterday, thanks to Mountain High, I had the good fortune of being able to go snowboarding. It's not very often that you can snowboard north of the equator in September. The reason was for Mountain High's second annual Buck Off. The event is to score a few dollars off the price of this year's season pass. That's good enough, but the jibbing with your friends in the summer is what really makes it great.
Joey Sexton is staying out here with me for the next two weeks, and the Buck Off was on the top of our list of things to do while he's out here. He's a good friend of mine, and we always have plenty of fun riding together.
Mr. Sexton.
Me, blowing off some dust.
Mt. High gave the riders in the Buck Off three drop-ins to choose from this year, which cut down on the line, but we just wanted to session the wall ride. So, for about an hour and a half, we dropped in below the line, and practiced some skate moves on the slanted top wall. The first run was nerve wracking. First run jitters in front of a few hundred people get magnified, especially when you're buddies with the announcer.
Aside from the riding. Mt. High was having a graffiti contest on the skirts of a handful of rails. A bunch of taggers came out to legally show their talents, and I, for one was amazed at the detail they were getting with a spray can in the wind.
Plenty of companies were in the house, giving away goodies to the large crowd, and showing their new products. Local shop Powder and Sun also had a tent set up that resembled and open-air snowboard market. Check out the new line of hats from Nirvananda. It's a hat company that two young ladies started. They make some pretty cool hats, and are definitely thinking outside the box.
After the snow melted in the hot temperatures, the snowboards were exchanged for skateboards, and an ollie contest got a bit crazy, as this guy risked his ribs for a bit of glory.
Unfortunately, they had to mow down what was left of the snow, to keep the kiddies off of it after the event, because we were going to steal some of what was left and check out some local spots. No big deal, because the hour and a half of riding that we did do had proven to us how out of shape we were, and that we should just call it a day...a good one at that.
