"O-Matic Snowboards will be made in China and will be affordable for the kids. Rider owned and Operated. O-Matic Snowboards is a company started by Andreas Wiig, Todd Richards, and Tara Dakides. Each rider has tried hundreds of different snowboards and know what works best for them on the hill. Trust companies and riders who actually ride the product they make. These boards are brand new and you will see much more from them."

WOW!
WOW!
WOW!
I have been looking into this "affordable for the kids" statement and have found many companies that make boards affordable.... without having them made in Communist Countries.
*The three riders that "created" this brand should be ashamed of themselves...and should know better!

before you get all preach-y about o-matic's production, why don't you go toss your x-box, your hard drive, your cell phone, your ipod, your skateboard shoes, snowboard boots, your outerwear, your goggles (like your von zippers that you list in your profile as owning) all in the garbage. after doing so, then tell us why it’s bad to buy from an emerging socio-economic superpower.
to my knowledge, o-matic has bever tried to 'hide' the fact that they are building some/all (?) their decks in china (or wherever it is). so, you coming on here going "wow! wow! wow!" is rhul smurt and up ter dut.
and it's no secret that nine year-olds have the most nimble hands for core profiling.

well done berry...
good job todd. still the champ.
This is a great thread...
I happen to use blunts manufactured in china... they work just as good as the ones rolled in cuba by 7 year olds.
LJJ said it best..
skate shoes, sunglasses, boots, binders, golf clubs.
Name one person you know that buys only u.s manufactured goods.
Its seems impossible nowadays!
Anyways love to see people getting pissed! Try to go to canada or revolution, or even smokin', let alone Unity, or nevsumm, and see what wholesale prototypes and production cost are on a decent sidewall board.
Nuff said, I ride a Unity but just because i like big thick heavy boards that slash well, and coincidently are made in the US.(+ they are free)
But if Todd gave me a O matic i would ride that shit too!
Bourgault showed me some of the protos last winter at TR's house and in between watching his movies and sleeping on his couch, they look pretty nice, good flex/weight, nice tapers.
Shit -remember there just snowboards.!
hahah Way to use your throttle Todd!
J. Bourgault...
is another secret weapon...
vroom
hi gary. hope borgault washed the sheets
jo-matix
TR--just watch out for the jo-matix knock-offs. I've heard stories where the come off the same production line and end up on the bay.

dude that is so insane...
i want that for my graphic, or at least a t shirt.
yup.
i'd order one.

Since this thread is back alive, Todd any chance of this making it on a board or t-shirt?

its rad that
you are so up on curent affairs ! as ljj said, we have never tried to hide that fact that production is in china. in fact, it was really the only affordable way to get the brand off the ground. to accomplish what we wanted to we had to keep the costs down, thus we have our boards made back east, waaaaaaay back east. as far as other companies that make affordable stuff for kids, i dindt write that, but that is one of our goals, to not skimp on the marketing but keep the board prices down. the boards that other folks usually market as the "cheap" board usually look like they had 5 min of time on the graphics, and would ride like absolute crap. feel free to e amil me personally if you have any other concerns or would like to tell me how to be ashamed of myself. word of advice, if you are going to be a public advisor to the snowboard world, you should really be more on it, we had story on the whole omatic business thing back in june in twbusiness. cant wait for the next one, "this just in, the world is round!!!!!"
more like
"this just in, the snow in indoor snow stadiums is not made from water, but in fact, comes from the sweat being produced in snowboard factory sweat shops in china." "Support american made sweat." (this may not fit the original statement or make sense, i just thought it was funny, hahaha)
boards look nice, todd. any demo days for this season?
we are doing a new line of boards next year called...
the politically incorrect sweatshop series or p.i.s.s. (tm) . we will have different components of the boards made in the following countries , by 9 year olds who have never been outdoors: iran, Venezuela, north korea, Afghanistan, and canada
aw zheah!
LMAO
LOL
hahahahaha. like that.
U.S.A.
I can't wait for the days when unions are gone and we can give our poor work-deprived children their jobs back... I have been to Pittsburgh and seen them looking longingly at the steel mills.
Todd, I would like to join your movement... Maybe the tagline for O-Matic should be.... "O-Matic: It's for the kids" or "Do it for the kids"
I'm in.
sign me up for one of those.
i am
working on that stuff. it would be sweet to do a demo day slash contest somewhere in colorado. like ride the boards followed by pizza and a opposide handed throwing contest. dude you have to film yourself opposide hand throwing as hard as you can, mucho funnie
hahahah......
hahahah......

My friend told me that 'the industry' sits around and smells its own farts all the time. I told her to shut up and go watch more southpark. But maybe she has a point.

Hey, just for sport, will somebody try to argue Against T. Richards? Maybe even call him a fucknut? We could stipulate that your cool points will remain at their already stratospheric levels.
i am a fucknut
whats yer point
i'll let you know
once i figure out how to get my head out of all this goddamned sand.
Alright Mr. Todd.... You Fuck Nut
Personality Lost!
So where did this industry go wrong over the past 30+ years that the passion eventually died? Mr. Richards I see that as a professional in this business you have seen things come and go. Also I assume that you have seen Morrow Snowboards change hands a few times, and your clothing sponsor buy out your board sponsor…. so in a way… couldn’t “The Public Advisor” be correct in his / her cast of shame?
As a veteran in the snowboard business there are people that expect more of you then simply cashing in on your famous name by way of moving production of a new board company that you support to a “developing” nation…. under the guise that you had no other choice… only to fuel the profits necessary to continue paying for the lifestyle you enjoyed as a pro. If you truly were down for the “kids” you would do something truly revolutionary…and different then the “norm” of the snowboard manufacturing / marketing business and capitalize on your integrity as someone who truly cares!!!
Since the dawn of the Sherman’s original “snurfer,” Jake, Chuck and Tom’s amazing wooden incarnation’s and the eventual public acceptance of what we now know as snowboarding… the premise has been and always be to have fun riding snow!
It is well known that China is a burgeoning economic superpower, and generous “savings” to corporations doing business there can be had. It is also well known that America is no longer a country that specializes in quality manufacturing, nor does it purvey itself as such.
It does not seem like there is a “buy american” argument going on here, but simply a- “if you truly cared about the kids…then you would care about the kids making the snowboards you sell… for the kids!” argument.
Hate to call you to task Mr. Richards, but if O-Matic is truly “your” company… then please answer to the snowboard world why anyone in their right mind should support your next house payment with their hard earned money when all your doing is no better then the business people that are currently killing this industry that we know and love because of people like you??

did you read this entire post?

right
That's what I was thinking too. He says if anyone wants to talk more on it, just shoot him a pm - even though he already gives his reason for production across the Pacific in his response.
you are intitled to your opinions...
about the way we are doing things. all i can really say is that i love snowboarding, it's my life, it's everything to me. this business is a part of my evolution as a snowboarder. i am proud of our company, and i'm not going to apologize for making boards in china, i know that our factory is legit. i hope that you can be as happy with your life's work as i am with mine, good luck to you.
Red Economics
China is an amazing country on the krux of a cultural explosion. We, in America, are scarred to death of the fact that they have become such an economic super power.
Bottome line is we demand, and they supply. So watch your "buy American!" words carefuly-chances are the majority of products you own have been made in China.
Plus where else can you pick cool shit like this:
Doood, run! Cops!
holy crap!!!
krull !!!!!!!!
No offence to all you Yanky Doodles
Its a well held view by the rest of the world that the terms Quality and American made do not go hand in hand - take your car industry, the products are a disgrace to your nation ! Yor manafacturing industries have lived off of past glories for too long
Boards made in China are probably just as good if not better than anything made any were else - its an age old problem . . i dont like buying stuff made in china because i dont agree with their politics, but a lot of other people wont buy american stuff for the same reason, plus have you ever been to china ? . the conditions in most of their factories are much better than most of the equivalent plants in the US, in fact i would say that there are more overworked and underpayed illegals working in US factorys than underage children in chinese ones. Sure there are sweatshops out there turning out knock off 50 cent tshirts and the like, but these are not the were these boards aregoing to be built.
I ride Libs because in my opinion they outperform any other boards, however (this is only my opinion) i go through at least 3 a season cos they aint built that great, or rather they are built with alot of care and love, but not with a view to taking a battering day in day out, but i put up with this cos they are shredtastic - and i am a freerider, not a rail rat
At least TR has said from the out his boards are made in china, and they are made there so that they are cheap enough for the kids to buy and get themselves on the mountain - in my mind that reason alone is enough to give my support to O-Matic.
hmm...
At least we HAVE manufacturing industries-
and they are giving you Englishmen a lot more choices on brands...
Eski Mofo
You say that you don't buy Chinese products, however in your profile you list DC, Oakley, Salomon bindings and Bonfire outerwear as some of the companies that you buy. I hope that you are aware that all of the above comapnies have facilities in... you guessed it, China.
Doood, run! Cops!
Your Right . . !
Yep . . . i got alot os shit from china, and im addicted to chinese food too, fact is i TRY not to buy stuff that i think comes from somewhere that dosnt respect their workers but i also want to buy stuff that works and i like - thanks for correcting me though, this season i am going to bust out some old sorrell boots, and ditch the goretex for a pancho and a couple of pairs of longjohns, then im going to make some binders out of hemp, and put them on my new home made bamboo board - so that when i go to my local mountain and hike up under the lifts so that i aint contributing to the poluting i can be assured that i am totaly green, fair trade and core as f++k to boot as i made everything myself like an O.G . .
///
that sounds good and all, but sorrells are made in china, too. sorry.
maybe you could bind your feet the way in which chinese women used to do, this way your feet would stay snuggly warm, as you show the world you are a man of fair trade and human rights.
Craig Kelly Forever.
chinese foot binding
done by 9 year olds in the omatic factory
!!!!
i think i am going to start a new trend, and only buy chinese made products so that i can support worldwide ecenomic growth and help spread the balance of wealth across the globe, and financialy contribute to the raising of skill levels of asian 9 year olds. . damm shopping for snowboards is getting harder than an afternoon in the mall with the mrs !

Slave labor is so Hot! O-Matic is O-K by me!
Krull...
Yeah, your plant should move every sunrise!
rad...
another person who gets it. krull was a sick movie, sound track by toto or someshit.
The Beast was a baddass
Wel weve still got aload of manafacturing industries - just small scale high end - most of your indycars are built buy us for example - we let the colonies f around with the low quality stuff - talking of Krull the way i see it is that TR is Colwyn and the snowboard industry is The Beast about to get roasted alive!
(.)(.)
this doots "profile" is pretty damn funny
Oh....Watch the words: Watch the World Please.
China:
Although an emerging economic power of the sorts no average ignorant American can comprehend, is still in the business of Communism. That basically means to those of us who have no knowledge of world events is this:
When you do business in China the money you pay for your goods to be produced will go directly to the Chinese Government first. Then (due to the workings of Communism) will be distributed amongst the people in an anything but equal manor. I.E. the people (although they are working more and have more then they have ever had in their lives...still suffer in ways you or I could never know!)
There is not one person in this world (save for those of Chinese origin who are very close to the government) who can do business in China without the "good grace" of the Chinese Government and inevitably adding dollars (or yuen) to their ever growing bank accounts. Money in China goes to the Government first and the people second.
This is a problem that goes beyond "helping" the Chinese people or even way beyond the argument that "everything you own" is made in China. It is an issue of a truely global scale.
And please don't close your eyes to the fact that everything you buy that has "made in china" stamped on it was made of Chinese Raw Materials in the same low quality environments that your final product was made.
Why do you think your $500.00 Ride or K2 snowboard you bought last year because of their cool team riders and grandeous promotions did not continue to ride the way it did when you bought it. And would it surprise you to know that it only cost the K2 Corporation $10-20 USD to make it?
In the last 3 years I have been "through" the following Chinese made goods:
4 Apple Ipods @$3-400 a piece
1 Apple Laptop @ $1500.00
10 pairs of "Various" brands of shoes that fell apart in places that had nothing to do with skateboarding
5 JBL Surround Sound Speaker Systems for my Computer
1 "motherboard" for a 2001 Ford Focus
1 Craftsman Drill
4 Sanyo Brand Cellular Telephones
2 Pairs of Von Zipper Goggles
5 Sets of "Various" brands of Snowboard Outerwear
2 pairs of Bose Noise Canceling Headphones
1 Mr. Coffee Coffee Maker
2 Pairs of Burton Cartel Bindings
5 Pairs of "Various" brands of snowboard boots
1 Ride Snowboard
2 K2 Snowboards
3 Exteranal Hard Drives
And Countless "Dwindle Distribution" Brand Skateboards...
The point is this:
Any argument made reference "We want to make things affordable," or "we had no other option but to produce in China." is an absolute load of crap! We here in America don't even know that the motor in our new Chevy Equinox was made in China.... but if you found an Equinox owner in middle America he/she would be the first to debate with you why you should not be driving a Toyota. (Which 8 times out of 10 was likely made in America of 90% American Content)
Educate yourself first...then talk shit! Maybe on this website some have been critical. Maybe without even knowing that the very technology that allows them to speak our minds in an open forum format was first developed here in the states...but finally produced in China.
I don't have any answers for the Global nature of what snowboarding is blindly walking into. I do however know that company owners and executives have options outside of "holy shit... we can make so much more money if we move production to ______________ insert "developing" country here." And this money making first, customers second mentality will eventually kill this industry that we all know and love.
I remember the days when Morrow, Lamar, Silence, Avalanche, M3, Ride and Limited were core.....rider represented brands made in North America by people who cared about what they were doing....with materials from quality suppliers.
Now look at how they have become dollars on a corporate balance sheet. Don't think the argument of "making snowboards less expensive for the kids" is the reason that companies make their stuff in China........

umm, look man...i don't want to rain your self-righteous parade, but you spelled yuan, "yueng".
oh, i almost forgot the proper name for the 'other' (as in hong kong) chinese currency is the ‘renminbi’, which means "the people's money"-none of that "in god we trust" bullshit. i should also add, that when you get old enough to turn off the fox news and pick up a reputable newspaper the renminbi is also used in its shortened version, rnb (you might want to know this for your investment and retirement portfolios).
before you get all preach to the world-travel the fuck outside of wisconsin (or wherever you live) and experience other people, their cultures and their work ethics. it is more than apparent that people, much like yourself consider paris, tennessee a foreign country (and by many accounts, I would agree with you on this front).
ps-when you state figures to back up your bullshit-let us know where you got them. until you do so, none of us buy into any of your enron numbers.
for example, "And would it surprise you to know that it only cost the K2 Corporation $10-20 USD to make it?" tell us all where you got these numbers and how you acquired them.
on top of that, when you make statements like, a k2/ride board rides worse off now than it’s made in china-tell us how and why.
i cannot respect you or your opinions until you learn more about the people and their country(s) that you are banging on, especially when you list von zippers as the googles you wear-yeah, you guessed it-'made in china'.
look, i know i sound like an asshole, but you sound like a dumb ass. get your shit together.
