I rarely feel inspired to go into depth on something as trivial as snowboarding, considering that it is a sport and lifestyle built on idividuality and creativity. However, I am a liitle disillusioned as of late on this sport that has meant so much to me and defined who I am for the better part of a decade.I'm sure I'm not alone in my thoughts that snowboarding is in a bad place right now.
I cannot say however that snowboarding as a whole is in a negative state. The popularity and commercialization of the sport has allowed for places like Park City, not only allow, but embrace snowboarding by building a world class park for all to enjoy.Companies like mervin have developed things like magne- traction to revolutionize the way snowboards are ridden.Snowboards, boots, goggles and outerwear in 2006 surely make snowboarding more enjoyable and comfortable than it was in 96.But the Mike olson's and Wooly's of the industry are who we have to thank for this, not the espn sportscasters or the bicycle companies who draw money to the sport by purchasing the rights to everything.I'm not here to start another debate on corporate presence in snowboarding. It's not the direction I'm going.
My motivation for blogging this blog was actually inspired by another mag's website and the amount of negativity I experienced there.I, as much as the next guy love logging onto my computer daily to see countless new videos of people enjoying snowboarding all over the world. It inspires me on those days that we are stuck behind our computer and not out there riding.
I don't think I've ever seen more S*#t talking in my life than I do on this website. There are forums a mile long with kids verbally assaulting what they watched in the video. When did snowboarding become about being better than everyone else or having the freshest new gear on?Has snowboarding been reduced to heckling kids off the mountain because they can't 450 on and off or switch back 9 the 60 footer.God forbid a kid falling on a jump or rail in big bear because he'll surely be deemed a kook by the elitist dude and his crew in the technine jackets because they had to wait five seconds for him to get up.CK is probably turning in his grave over the fact that film crews are getting in fist fights over snowboarding and the importance of "getting the shot".
Snowboarding used to be about "fun" and pissing off the occasional skier, not about screaming at kid who just fell on a rail in front of you trying to better his skills. It was about digging through a mag hoping a shot of Jamie Lynn's gloveless method would pop up.Shredding was genuinely fun ten years ago and it still is, but the overall moral needs a little boost.Instead of blaming corporate America for ruining snowboarding, I think we all need to take a look at what "we" are doing to have more fun on the hill and what our attitudes say about snowboarding in general. How about offering the kid who just ate shit in front of you advice on how to land that next time, because we too were once that kid.
