Beanie and Bikini Belated Blog

As the Northwest got pounded with snow last weekend, I was down in SoCal visiting moms and pops for Turkey Day. I was kinda bummed because I was missing the first big snow of the year, but at least there was a good contest to check out. As you all know by now, the second annual Beanies and Bikini’s Rail Jam went down in sunny San Diego last Saturday. Since I lost my camera on the Aspen trip a few weeks ago, I’ve been debating on which new one to buy. This left me in a jam though—luckily Prosser came thru and let me borrow his lil’ Canon SD 10 for the trip. Well of course I forgot to get the charger from him, and sure enough the battery died soon after the contest and I wasn’t able to retrieve my photos from the weekend until now. So here it is: The Bikini Blog…better late than never!

Magoon is the steeziest.

Sun Diego Boardshop, Boost Mobile and Monster Energy Drink kicked down the cash, giving the usual jib crowd yet another shot at 10 G’s. Even the ladies got in on the action, with a $2,000 first place prize. Last year’s winner Yale Cousino competed alongside rail jam veterans Mike Casanova and Lucas Magoon, as well as a long list of rail wreckers like Chad Otterstrom, Kevin Casillo, Boznuts and Sketchy D.

Not just another rail scaffolding contest, the Beanies and Bikinis is in Mission Beach. It's like a little amusement park with rides and shit, plus there is an afterparty at The Wave House with a Bikini contest! This year was even bigger than last year, with over 30 contestants strutin’ they stuff for a chance at the $1,500 first place prize.

I hooked up with The Block’s Gary Hansen and Brett from estate L.A. beforehand, and we got the party started with Dingo and the crew in the Boost Bus. As you may have seen in estate L.A.’s blog, the Boost bus is off the hook. A full on mobile club, the Boost bus is equipped with custom lighting, leather loungers, fully stocked bar and a V.I.P. champagne room. Redunky.

After that it was up to the judges’ perch to check out the contest. The first rounds were heated, with riders charging the set up one after another like a mini ramp snake sesh. Boznuts had some nice gap ollies over the kinked rail, while Technizzy’s Aaron Biittner was stomping smooth slides left and right. Bridges and Dingo were on the mic, while Academy’s Matty Peterson, twsnow.com’s Evan Lefevre and Metal Mike tallied the scores.

Check out Evan multitasking while Bozung gets some.

After a couple hours of nonstop rail jamming (and a couple trips to the craft service table), it was Lucas Magoon who was looking the steeziest.

Hustla's Combo fool.

Sketchy broke his board and won $500 for worst fall.

For the ladies, SNOWBOARD’s Issue 3.1 Kits girl Melissa Evans took out Desierre Melancon to claim victory, and a rumored new sponsorship from Monster. Nice job Melissa.

Then it was over to The Wave House, where an open bar made sure everyone had a good time. The bikini contest was soon underway, and Chris from Vestal introduced the ladies to the rowdy crowd.

Hot tubs up front helped the girls stay warm, and the judges had their work cut out for them making their selections. Transworld is still swinging from our nut sacks, finally coming up with some co-branded merchandise of their own in the form of Neff beanies. That’s almost as bad as Future stealing Todd Richard’s old magazine name, Drift for their women’s issue. So many dickriders.

She was from Sweden.

Girls love hot tubs.

Wowowewu!

The winner Stephanie on the left.

Valient Thor rocked out and closed it down. When the open bar ended, heads were scattering in all directions. DVS’ Ricky Melnik was going on a booze crooze, the Sun Diego girls headed to PB, while Creeps and I headed over to the Hyatt Islandia to meet up with some honeys from O-side and keep the party going. After a while, the whole crew showed up and we got loud—real loud. The coolest thing about it, the hotel manger not only didn’t kick us out, but actually hung out and partied with us. She even offered to give us a bigger room! Man, San Diego’s pretty cool sometimes. Not as cool as Mt. Baker though, where they’ve received over 150 inches since it started snowing. When I finally made it back to Portland on Monday night, it was even snowing in town! It was an awesome start to a great week of shredding, which you can check out later on the front page.

Special Thanks to Boost Mobile, The Wave House, Hyatt Islandia and Sun Diego Boardshop.

yeah, that was beyond weak that future lifted the 'drift' title.

but i mean come on, what do you expect from a guitar and computer magazine company that does not know shit about basic snowboard history.

'drift' was a rad magazine (and it was run by a janitor), i still have my first issue right beside my 'power edge' skateboard mags.
