Big Mountain Resort has announced a new nighttime terrain park and super pipe competition series called Night Rider, which will debut on Dec. 29. The first competition will be held in the Fishbowl Terrain Park located on Chair 3. Operations personnel are continuing to make snow in Big Mountain’s super pipe as temperatures permit and will open the feature as soon as possible.
For the first competition, all competitors will take two runs through the terrain park using the features any way possible. Judges will pick the top three riders based on overall impression, style, and difficulty. A competitor can utilize any combination of terrain park features, from jumps, to rails, to boxes. Skiers and snowboarders will be judged separately and the event is limited to 60 competitors.
“This style of event promotes creativity and expression of individual styles,” said Josh Knight, manager of the events department.
Registration happens from 4 to 5 p.m. at Big Mountain’s Information Center in the main village. There is a mandatory inspection of the terrain park features from 5 to 6 p.m., with the competition running from 6 to 8 p.m. Awards will be presented at Moguls Village Pub after the event, starting at 8:30 p.m.
All competitors must wear an approved helmet. No license is required and the contest is open to all competitors 8 years old and up. Participants under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver of liability.
Categories include Men’s and Women’s Amateurs (13 and over), Boys and Girls (12 and under), and a Pro class (8 and older), competing for various prizes on the individual nights and for cash prizes for the winners of the series. The final three competitions happen on Jan. 12 (Skier/Boarder Cross), Feb. 2 (Pipe Jam), and March 2 (Rail Jam).
Fees are $10 per night or $30 for the series for Men and Women, $5 per night or $15 for the series for Boys and Girls, and $15 per night or $50 for the series for the Professional category. Sponsors include Coke, K2, Rossignol, DaKine, Flip 7 Snowboards, Spyder, and Temple Décor.
