Alyeska Breaks Its Monthly Snowfall Record - 283 Inches

GIRDWOOD, AK – January 1, 2007 – The record for the most snowfall in a month at Alyeska has been broken. Alyeska received 283 inches of snow – almost 24 feet – in December 2006, breaking the previous monthly record of 274 inches set in January 2001 and far exceeding the previous December record of 247 inches in 2003.

Snow started falling steadily in early December. The 24 hour snowfall totals were 1 inch to 6 inches for eight days, 7 inches to 12 inches for ten days, and more than 12 inches for another eight days. There were five days in December 2006 where the 24 hour snowfall exceeded 20 inches.

Most notable was the week before Christmas when 100 inches fell over the course of seven days. This week of heavy snowfall was driven by Christmas Eve weekend with over five feet of snowfall in a 48 hour period. The evening of December 12th also saw another large snowfall when 18 inches fell in only four hours at the summit.

“This is the best December skiing I’ve seen in 32 years,” said Larry Daniels, General Manager of Mountain Operations at Alyeska.

Even though Alyeska receives the second most annual snowfall of any ski resort in North America, this record breaking December is 210 percent above average for this time of year. Alyeska is on pace to surpass its annual record of 1,116 inches set during the 1997-1998 winter season.

As of January 1, 2007, Alyeska has a mid-mountain base of 96 inches and a summit base of 102 inches.
