The Return to Blog Hollow

The third stop of the ’07 mid-winter road trip was Whistler, BC. After Stackin' Snow at Crystal and a Pillow Party at Mt. Baker, I hooked up with Bellingham local Heidi Ring (pictured above) and kept heading north. With an all time record snowfall season so far, Whistler is swimming in snow and I wanted to get my piece of it. So we headed back to the one place I knew the powder would be piled up: Blog Hollow.

Blog Hollow (which is really a spot above Frog Hollow) is a little place that Basher and I destroyed daily last year while we were living in Whistler for the season. A ride up the Peak Chair, a challenging traverse and a short hike brings you to a wide open powder field above a rarely ridden cliff band. There’s always freshies to be found, so Heidi and I wasted no time in tracking out as much snow as we could all morning long.

First, it's a long ride up the Gondola.

Then, it's up the Peak Chair and across the ridge. On the first run we found a dope chute with bottomless turns below.

Heidi powering into a turn.

And gettin' buried.

Towards the end of the day we found a magical gully that still hadn't been tracked out. It was a happy ride all the way down to Creekside.

Whistler's so big that sometimes you gotta take breaks on the way down!

After the long day of powder shralping, it was time for lunch at Dusty's. They got good food, a cool DJ and of course, Ceasars.

Canadians love their Ceasars. Dusty's even adds beef jerkey to the mix! It's like a meal in a drink...genius.

Later on that evening, it was on to dinner at Sachi Sushi.

A nice alternative to the ever popular Sushi Village, Sachi is smaller, more affordable and just as delicious. This was King Crab wrapped in Ahi Tuna. Doesn't get much better than that.

Then it was over to Earls for some more drinks before heading underground. There were these wierd guys in there who thought it was Halloween or something—as you can see, it wasn't really workin' out for them in the girl department.

One place the girls do flock to however, is Garfs. Garfs is the spot of the SNOWBOARD party last April, and the good guys at Garfs are always down to have a good time. This night they were throwing a New Year's Eve Party for all the employees that had to work on the real New Years. What a great concept.

There was lots of lovely ladies in the house.

Jesse Huffman was there too, fresh in from NYC.

Hey, Happy New Year....again.

Rube Goldberg and friend.

Helen having fun.

The guys at Garfs know how to party, and the by that point my nightly intake consisted of Ceasars, Sapporo, Saki, Crown, Jager and Tequila. Recipe for disaster. Luckily, Hiedi and I made it home safely, hoping for another big pow day in the morning.

Although it was dumping again when we left the bar, by the morning it had switched over to rain and ultra high winds that shut the whole mountain down. A big storm was moving in, so we headed out of town, down the Sea to Sky, back to America and Mt.Baker. After studying the forecast though, it looked like Stevens Pass was gonna get the most out of this one. I dropped Hiedi off in Bellingham, and kept on truckin' down to Seattle to hook back up with Jeff Baker. We planned to ride Stevens the following day, and little did I know, it would turn out to be the best one of all. Check back for the final post of the trip soon.
