Don't Fly Through London

Oslo, Norway

I arrived at Oakley Headquarters to meet Hotell and bang out some work at 11am on Sunday morning, we worked until about 1:30, and took a Suburban to LAX. Arrived with just about enough time, to check in... So we waited in line for E-Ticketing with our four board bags, two large duffels, two backpacks, my camera bag and laptop bag... Get our tickets but no is taking care of tagging the luggage... There were 25 kiosks pumping out peoples tickets, but only four people behind the counter tagging luggage. Finally after about 20 minutes I ask one of the traffic line guys what the deal is and he snaps on me.

“What are you in a rush? Do you need to go somewhere?”

“Well yeah we do,” Hotell and I blurt back.

“Okay, let me see what I can do, maybe I can call in some help.” as he puts a phone up to his ear and states, “... maybe my wife can come down and help.”

We laugh and ingore the angry / mad man... Wait another 20 minutes, and finally get our bags checked... But later we will learn that they miss-tag our luggage and end up with different bags in Oslo at different times, classic.

So, we take off and Justin Stephens and I fly out of LAX with two carry-on bags each for our camera gear and laptops.

“When you fly out of London you can only have one bag that weighs 8 KG,” yells the angry young man. Stating to us that we have to go through customs, go outside and back in for departures, wait in line, told that our stuff weighed too much, re-packed, got back in line, told we could not make our flight now and needed to go get in the ticket line, got in the ticket line, told it was our fault, after trying to explain our situation to no avail, we purchased tickets for the 7:30pm flight to Olso at $225.00 EACH. Now supposedly arriving into Oslo at 10:30pm... But it’s only 1pm and what the fuck are we going to do...

Other problem is we had no cell phones that worked yet internationally... And our chargers for international connections to connect to our laptops were packed in our other bags that we had to check due to making the 8 KG weight limit. Now, I am stressing because my whole camera collection is in checked luggage – $15,000 worth of all my gear.

Then after we purchased our tickets and went through security, turns out there was no fucking weight limit... FUCK... My camera gear!!!! Then when we settle in we realize we packed a lot of stuff we needed, power cords, adapters, you name it, then to top it off just by chance Justin asks the desk if they can let us know if our bags made it to Norway... Turns out we were supposed to let the front desk know about our flight change because they do not keep track... So we both get in line again, find where our bags are, make sure they are getting on our new flight and laugh so hard you would not believe it...

The stories just become nightmares, and then you laugh your mothafucking ass off. Justin said he might honestly start drinking for the first time ever TODAY!!! But I am covering enough for both of us.

Then we spend the next several hours powering out emails and work... To find out our 7:30 flight is delayed... We finally take off at 9:30pm, London time... Get into Olso at midnight Norway time... Take a cab with all gear and arrive at the hotel at 2:00am.

So I left at 1:30pm on Sunday and arrived at 2am on Tuesday, oh yeah! In the end my story was crazy, sad and funny that is how I would sum up my travels.

Visualize everything working out!

always, always fedex expensive goods (like camera equipment, etc.) to your final destination(s). most of the airlines are about as responsible and motivated as the u.s. postal servivce.

thus, you end up carrying less weight, paying less excess weight/baggage charges and have more to spend on overpriced, warm beer in airport pubs.
