I have an academy board and love it, but I've heard that they went under rescently. At first I didn't believe it ut then I saw a photo of Nick Dirks on a Rome and Scott Stevens on a Lib Tech. Does anyone know what happened?

I really didn't contribute much of anything personally, but learned a lot! I am enamored by the fact that many people in this industry love it so much that they hate to see it go the way of "big business!" and am now more educated as to the issues (specifically manufacturing of stuff we ride in communist nations such as china) of this industry that I love so much.
Keep on talkin' everyone! Snowboarding is relying on you! And thank you to snowboard magazine for allowing all the fodder!

yeah, i apoligize for any anger ive caused. i may have went to far attacking todd. its hard to run a snowboard company and im sure u dont need some kid talking shit about your company. but im not apoligizing for my stance on chinese made snowboards. thats also not to say that people wernt talking shit and being dickheads to me. but its all cool now. i mean look at how many people left there own two cents on this subject maatter. so at least were getting people talking but i think we can all show a little more respect for each other.

In the Pursuit of Powder! Why can't we all just get along. Attacking anothers beliefs is beyond this fourm. Everyone has a right to express their opinions, but don't knock others for the way they feel, express it and move on. In the end there are no winners and losers, just a bunch of happy kids. As far as Chinese snowboards.... they're cheaper too make in China, and the young kids, and monetarily deprived adults, need to get cheap stuff to stay in a sport we all love. the only reason i evan brought up the thing about chinese manafacturing and o-matic is because u were origianly defending them and there buissness decision. so if your going to put your 2 cents on the subject matter i will add mine. i didnt know in order to post a comment we all had to aggree on everything. i do travel alot. my dad is a teacher so i am blessed with the oppertunity to travel in the summer, winter break, spring break etc. the only reason we moved from colorado springs to georgia is so my dad can actually make a living teaching. if u dont travel and see the world, different cultures, and religions u will have a narrow minded look on life and people who are different than you.

Sure china has some sweatshops, but it also has some of the most advanced manafacturing facilities in the world staffed by people who are university educated and dedicated to their work - now i would rather buy something put together in that enviroment than by some high school drop out stoner in a shed somewhere in middle america.
Todd is trying to put something back into a sport that has given him so much - do you not think he could take a big cheque from someone to shred their boards? Omatic are actually putting out a good quality product designed by people who know there shit that can be aforded by your average shred - as someone who owns their own company i know that running your own buisness is like standing on the edge of a cliff every day, and it takes balls for TR to do that in an industry as cutthroat as shred sticking.
What is important is that we have an industry that is stable and lead by people comitted to the future rather than the bottom line, and in my book having people like todd at the healm of our companies is a great thing. Extreme sports related industries are v prone to boom and bust, just look at the potted history of skateboarding. Over in Europe since the adent of freeskiing there has been a definite decline in Snowboard uptake, which is no bad thing as those who continue to shred do it for the love of the hill rather than the image.
You shouldn,t be thinking about where your board is made, but who it is made by, and thats the bottom line.
why do u think boards r made in china? because there cheaper to make and todd can get around us labor laws. would u approve of a us worker getting paid $1.00 an hour? i would rather have a high school drop out make my snowboard over an expolited worker anyday. unlike other products its just as easy to buy a board made in europe or america than it is to buy a board made in china. im not saying boards that come out of china cant be good. but why support china when u can buy a high quality board made in america or europe?
of course we wouldn't approve of a US worker at $1/hour. Minimum wage is what it is because of the estimated cost of living. You cannot live in America on $1/hour, but in china, it costs less to rent on apartment, buy food, etc. Its all relative. I never been to China, but I know production guys that go over there and it seems to me that snowboard factories aren't such bad places. They're just like they used to be in the US but now they are in China. LIke they picked it up in Cali and dropped it down in Shanghai. I'm not sure were exploiting workers the way you think we are. But I've never been there and I don't know. If we were talking about semi conductors, we wouldn't be having this debate. China increases savings. But snowboarding has a rad culture attached to it, so we all care a little more. I'm glad. Againstme you have a lot of time on your hands to respond to every post put on here. I'm jealous.
what can i say, im off today and i have shit else to do. thats why i am so concerned for workers overseas because i see first hand how minimum wage workers are treated. so i can only imagine how bad it is over in china. my uncle and aunt have both been to china, theyve told me the poverty in china is unreal. i dont think in huge citys u can afford to live on 1 dollor an hour. look at the death rates caused by starvation and poverty in china.
On a serious note, when i was travelling round Colorado last winter, passing through places like Delta nad Montrose was a real eyeopener to me . . . i had not expected to see people living that badly in the US . . I have been fortunate to travel a lot of places and that was some eye opening sh!t . . there are people living in the US who really arent any better off than the chinese you rattle on about . . i know a lot of my eurodisney chums and i cannot believe that you let your government get away with that shit down in New Orleans, far bigger crime against humanity than most of your foreign policy fuck ups.
i have been to montrose it is a poverty sticken place and it sucks. but ask your self, what can we do to turn that around? perhaps opening factorys and employing us workers. how about giving tax cuts to companys who open factorys up in the united states and raising taxes to those who move factorys over seas? what if we socialized the oil industry and used its profits to make wages higher, build better schools, and have a free health care system? the way our president handled katrina is grounds for impeachment.
Not to mention what we are doing to our children and our elderly. Or forgetting to do.

Americans demand products to be cheap. In order to meet this demand AND make a profit, because last time I checked, companies exist to make money, something has to give. I know your response will be how some can some companies like Unity or Mervin still make profit and manufacture in USA? Volume! Unity doesn't make as many boards as K2. If Unity had to make 10x as much, I'm not so sure they can meet the demand, stay handmade in the USA, and be financially feasible. As for Mervin, I believe some of the lower end GNUs, which are primarily sold in big box stores, are made in China.
labor is cheaper in china. u.s. companies capitalize on this less expensive labor by having virtually the same product built for a fraction of the price of its american counterpart.
