Oregon Trifecta 2007: A Summer Concrete Shred Session

Words/Photos by Bryanna Woll

Legends like Steve Alba, Duane Peters, and Rune Glifberg were barkin’ it up this weekend at the 2007 Oregon Trifecta. A three-stop bowl-riders competition, the festivities started in Lincoln City on Friday, hit Portland’s Pier Park on Saturday and culminated at the freshly finished Battleground Washington on Sunday afternoon. This weekend’s competition was only a small portion of the Bowl-Riders series.

Although I didn’t make it out to Lincoln City for the first day of celebrations, I woke up and got out to Pier Park early Saturday morning to get in a little skate-sesh before the Pros took over. The set-up at Pier Park is a 9-foot bowl and an 11-foot bowl connected by a full pipe. The pool is so deep that there is a separate doorway just to get out. The feat of the day was to make it over this doorway, known as the mousehole. Local-rider Shane Bell was the second ever to clear it. Steve Alba hit it later, getting himself third on the list. The temps rose above 80 degrees that day, giving Duane Peters a chance to show off his body art and everyone else a reason to look forward to winter. In attendance was barely alive X-games free-faller Jake Brown, skate and snowboard announcer-extraordinaire Dave Duncan, a random assemblage of the Grenade crew as well as Chet Childress, Benji Galloway and Glen Charnoski.

That night everyone congregated on a warehouse rooftop to look at some art, re-hydrate, and hear a few tight DJ sets. Standing above the train-tracks close to Burnside, the city lights illuminated the roof and the sketchy wooden ladder you had to crawl up to get out there. The art show featured street art and photos from local skaters as well as the Trifecta trophies.

Sunday morning we all piled in to the van and headed north to Battleground Washington. All stoked to ride the brand new Battleground park we got a good 30 minutes of skating before the skies opened and did what they usually do in Washington, rained. Battlegrounds bowl riding features a cradle that Steve Alba was owning, as well as a clover bowl and a few nice hips. The Ladies and Masters got to ride before the rain cancelled the Pros division. There was no battle at Battleground that day. Word on the street is the final session was moved to a riders only Portland garage and lasted late into the night. Still no word as to who came out victorious.

Nice photos. That's Glen Charnoski attempting the mousehole, he didn't make it. Mark Conahan is doing the frontside invert during the Grand Masters competition. The photos at the bottom are by Bryce Kanights.

It was an amazing event. Highlights were Steve Alba going over the door in the Grand Masters competition. Only Peter Hewitt had done it before, Sergie Ventura's giant airs and 540s. In the Pro division, local Shane Bell was the first skater ever over the mousehole backside, followed by Rune Glifberg and Benji Galloway. There was lots more amazing action. Check out SkateandAnnoy.com over the next few days for more coverage.

Still no word as to who came

Nice angle on that invert shot.

Still no word as to who came out victorious.

Why yes there is, came out about a half hour after the event ended.

just walked in the door from oregon tonight/this morning.

it's true, the best parks everywhere.

bring lots of ice, concrete hurts more as you get older (and shittier).

and oregon change your shit-ass speed limit. i cross your state line, not even ten feet into it and you give a $107 speeding ticket (that was my booze money for the night, bitches).
