SHAUN WHITE REMAINS UNDEFEATED IN 2007 AST DEW TOUR COMPETITION AND MIKE SPINNER NABS HIS FIRST WIN AT THE VANS INVITATIONAL, THE THIRD EVENT OF THE SEASON
Portland, Ore. – Olympic snowboarding champion Shaun White remained perfect in AST Dew Tour competition with a Skateboard Vert victory and Mike Spinner earned his first Dew Tour win in the BMX Park Saturday at the Vans Invitational.
The 20-year-old White fell during the end of his first run and was fifth at the end of the first round, but rebounded in the second run to finish at 91.25. Canada's Pierre-Luc Gagnon was second at 89.00, followed by Brazil's Bob Burnquist at 87.75.
“I was just watching everyone else and after my first run, I just focused and landed it,” said White, from Carlsbad, Calif. “I didn’t want to pull another X Games and wait to the last minute (to pull out the win).”
White, who won X Games Gold earlier this month, has competed the last two seasons on the AST Dew Tour, but this is the first time he has won three consecutive events. He is the only athlete on the AST Dew Tour to go undefeated so far this season.
“It was hard for me with all the snowboarding stuff last year, but I made a promise to myself that I would really focus on my skateboarding and go for it (Dew Cup) this year,” White added.
Pierre-Luc Gagnon of Montreal, Canada finished in second with 89.00 and Bob Burnquist of Rio de Janiero, Brazil was third at 87.75.
Spinner, 19, landed a 1080 (three revolutions) during his second run to secure the victory with a 94.00 score. Dave Mirra and reigning Dew Cup champion Daniel Dhers attempted to knock Spinner out of the lead, but both fell during difficult tricks midway through their second runs. Mirra finished in second with 93.50 and Dhers was third with a 92.33.
“I’m just so psyched,” Spinner said. “I ride with Mirra and Dhers all the time. I guess tonight was the night I was able to put it all together.”
With the victory, Spinner of Miami, Fla. now sits second in the point standings, 55 points behind Dhers.
The four-day competition is the third of five stops of the AST Dew Tour that features skateboarding, BMX and freestyle motocross. Sunday's action features Freestyle Motocross finals. White will continue his quest for the Dew Cup in Salt Lake City in September and the finale in Orlando, Fla. in October.
