Peanut Butter & Women

joe kite

Some things are meant to go together. Like chinese food and ice cream. Or peanut butter and women. Yep, JP Walker and Forum have parted ways leaving one of the inarguably most influential shreds in snowboarding a free agent, and broken off from the brand he essentially made and stood for. How does a company go from the Forum 8 to being millions in debt to being absorbed by Burton? By lots of spending. I heard it from the horse's mouth, who now runs a snowboard brand from Encinitas. Did anyone know Joe P (not JP) flies kites at the pro level? I'm not kidding, he does. He's deadly with a kite, like a ninja with ice cream. Snowboarding Saves Lives!

Old News

That happened almost five months ago, and word is Forum's not stoked that good ol' TW is still bringin' up old shit.

Fight for the little guy - Read SNOWBOARD Magazine!

this may be old news

but the article is recent. i'm actually surprised tw published the interview at all. but isn't this how it should be? isn't the media supposed to report news, and keep the public informed of the facts? shouldn't magazines and newspapers be sold based on the merit of their content rather than, say, the strength of their advertisers?

as for forum being bummed; if someone was making up rumors and passing them off, that is talking shit. speaking facts isn't talking shit. and as long as FACTS are presented, the reader can (rather should) make up his/her own mind. if forum's not stoked on what happened between them and walker, then maybe they should've prevented what happened from happening.

From what I know, the issue may be that the facts are not necessarily presented correctly.

good point

and another media responsibility. maybe instead of an interview, tw should have just written a straight feature and interviewed both forum and walker.

Fully agree, that would definitely be a new high for the journalism standards of TWS.

on one hand

i wanna run with your comment. on the other hand, maybe the time isn't right.

To clarify, my intent is the same as yours, I would like to see true impartial reporting of the snowboarding news, not simply press releases and interviews. This goes for all publications, not just TWS. I do understand the issues at hand when a substantial amount of revenue comes from the industry.

To SNOWBOARD's credit, some of the best articles I have read about the industry have been here.

As an example, here are three topics that are slightly controversial but deserve attention in the mainstream "printed" snowboard media ripped from the debates on SNOWBOARD-MAG.COM

1. How does a parent company affect a brand (Sims)?
2. Is Nike bad for snowboarding?
3. Why can't someone that rips like Andy Finch move product?

I would love to see a well thought out article that highlights both sides of the argument for any one of those.

good q's, and i know you said they're from the site forums,

but i'm thinking, to be more thorough, they should be more like:

1. how does a company's structure affect a brand?
2. are non-endemic brands bad for snowboarding?
3. what makes one "pro" more valuable than another?

There's a great article about

There's a great article about Forum's history in an issue of FSM Business edition from last season. There was no sugar coating and they interviewed all the key players. It's amazing that they were so huge and can admit they made crap products back then.

well...

JP;s now on Nike Snowboarding anyway. So he's not going to be stressing on Forum anymore as he's rolling Scrooge McDuck-like in his fortune. Now the question is not "Is Nike bad for Snowboarding" but "Who else is Nike going to pick up to make themselves look/seem/be legit"....

Thanks Metz,

I was wondering when that was coming. So if DK quadrupled his salary, what did JP get? Damn the diamond encrusted swoosh is going to be the size of Rhode Island.

brad's article was good

but i think there was a lot of info that was omitted. and some of the most relevant questions weren't asked, or were overlooked. one of the better articles, nonetheless.

Correct

But, there's always two sides to every story.

Right on, each side has their interpretation of the "facts" and the truth (most times) lies somewhere in the middle.

well

remember, just for reference, that facts are facts, and are inarguable. for example, a guy stabbing another guy. the stabbing in and of itself is inarguable because it happened. this makes the stabbing a fact. the truth behind the motive of the stabbing is what's left for interpretation, and this is very difficult to prove one way or another.
