Whats up with gooners techinine bindings

I just finished going through Transworld mag, and noticed something a bit wierd.

There's a picture of Lucas 'Gooner' Magoon on a rail in Section outerwear in the bit about outerwear. Check out his bindings. If you look closely you can see he's riveted/screwed on a pair of the 'wings' probably from an old pair of Burton Mission GT's to his Technine highbacks.

If you dont know what im on about its a piece of curved plastic about 3 inches wide that extends outward from the top of the highback towards the nose/tail. I think the idea was that you could lean into it putting more pressure through the binding...

Whats up with that? I tried my friends Mission GT's a few years back and hated them. Just felt really restrictive, like being tied to your highback.

Anyone know why hes doing this?

Some pros modify their setups to their liking. It's DIY R&D. From simple things like adding t-bolts all the way to thinning bases and slicing topsheets to alter flex patterns. I guess you don't really hear about it with bindings all that much. I haven't seen the picture in question, but I bet having wings could be sweet for press tricks. They look kinda silly so they're probably best tucked under you pants. The new MFMs could be one of the best bindings this year, and I doubt he needs any extra wings.

I have always preferred the term Frankenbinders over DIY R&D

I wouldnt pay attention to an

I wouldnt pay attention to anything 'gooner' does.

I disagree...

I would pay attention to him destroying every rail he gets near. I guess thats just not cool enough for you?

Well..

Gooner is riding a pair of 2008 MFM's, which have a completely redesigned heelcup, footbed, highback, and im guessing he just put a little elbow grease and a little shop class experience and customized his binding, and I assure you, the Mission GT's can't hold the slightest bit of comparison to the new MFMs.

WHAT

Have you even seen the picture... You can see that they are the 'old' highbacks from last year, myabe hes put them on the new baseplates, i dont know. Yep the board is this years tho...

I looked at the photo the other day in the book store, it definitely is not a stock Technine highback. It does look an awful lot like the wing from the old missions. Some serious stickers on those bad boys.
