Hot Dawgs and Hand Rails SUPERPOST™

Joey Sexton goes up and over.

Since we didn’t report much from the recent ASR Tradeshow in San Diego, California, I figured it was about time for a good ol’ fashioned SUPERPOST™. Although a few have tried to use the title (violating serious federal copyright infringement laws in the process), the one and only original SUPERPOST™ can be found exclusively here on snowboard-mag.com. But honestly, if you’ve read one ASR SUPERPOST™, you’ve read ‘em all—from the usual Anchorman quotes about scotch, stayin' classy and a whale’s vagina to photos of scantily clad Metal Mulisha girls and drunk snowboarders at movie premiers. Don’t worry, if you’re really missing SNOWBOARD’s take on 2007's ASR, we’ll cover it all on The Scene page in an upcoming issue of the mag.

Some tough judges to impress: Simon Chamberlain and JP Walker.

So last week after the show I lurked around SoCal, making stops in Del Mar, Encinitas, Capo Beach, Irvine and Venice along the way. I had a nice Birthday dinner with Nic Drago and Wille McMillon and we discussed the state of shred; I paid a visit to the New Era™ offices to go over the next hat designs and saw my good friend Evan Rose over at Forum HQ; then I hung out with Brett from Estate LA for a couple days and we took in a Dodger game. All-in-all it was a great week, to be capped off with the 3rd Annual Hot Dawgs and Hand Rails Contest at Bear Mountain on Saturday, September 15th.

The Hot Dawgs and Hand Rails event that Bear Mtn. puts on every year has grown into a tradition for SoCal shreds. It’s a great way to get everyone stoked for the season before the snow starts falling, and it’s become the official kick off to winter as the first real snowboard contest in September. This year Bear upped the ante and created the most challenging course yet, filled with multiple jibs, boxes, ledges and gaps. Although they’re still teenagers, rail jam veterans like Lucas Magoon, Jonas Michilot and Joey Sexton battled it out for a chance at the $5,000 grand prize. And don’t forget about the ladies; first place is worth a healthy 2 G’s. Now that’s a good afternoon.

What wasn’t so good is the massive fire that is burning in the hills near Big Bear Lake. The Butler 2 fire, has scorched more than 15,433 acres in the San Bernardino National Forest and is about 12% contained, said U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Lisa Duke. Luckily it wasn’t close enough to shut down the contest, but it did shut down Hwy 18 forcing us to take the long way around on the 38. Brett and I met up with Exile in Hollywood, who offered to drive, while Gary came up from Oceanside to meet us at the spot. Once we got closer to the lake, the smoke from the fire looked pretty menacing.

Those are not the kind of trees that should be smoking.

But the show must go on, and thousands of people showed up to watch the riders, grab some free schwag and just hang out in the sunshine. Tent Village was poppin’, with all kinds of carnival like antics going on for people to walk away with something…even if it was just a stamp on the face. Eventually Burton said fuck it and just started tossing shit out.

There were lots of stencils going around.

Electric stamp to the neck.

Is that really a good look?

I suppose the tummy's always a good option.

The Active tent had a sit-up challenge.

Sharpie 'stash.

TK and some fans.

California Girls.

The rest of the Chamberlain brothers and 32's Eddie Lee.

Gary gave this guy the shirt off his back. Talk about earning your paycheck.

Around 5:00 pm the finals were getting ready to start, so it was back to the deck for happy hour!

Everybody loves happy hour.

I know Jamie Anderson does!

I think Jonas and Joey might have been born in the wrong decade. Straight outta Dazed and Confused, these two.

Dave and Dingo, aka Drunk and Drunker. Who's it gonna be guys?

Iris Lazz...a new name to watch out for.

Of course, SNOWBOARD's favorite Melissa Evans.

For the men, it was Scotty Vine taking the big check. And that's gonna about do it follks. After the contest there was a big underage afterparty at The Block, while all the old folks headed over to a BBQ joint where DJ Slipmat was doing his thing. Either way it was kinda a weird scene and around midnight we had to make like Volcom and peace off. Exile took it a little too far though and I had to take the wheel on the way back to LA, making several vomit stops for him on the way down. It was awesome. Special thanks to Bear Mtn., Electric, ThirtyTwo and all the other event sponsors, and check out snowboardrevolution.com for plenty more action shots from the contest.
