Jed Anderson bangin' his way to $3,000. Photo by Matty Alberts [MA]. The young Canadian took the grand prize at the Bonfire/Salomon Backyard Bang in Portland over the weekend, beating out jib jam regulars like Mike Casanova and Lucas Magoon (who took third). It is October in Portland, which means it's cold and it rains. With a runway of coarse ice chucks and a landing of deep puddles, the competitors toughed it out for the dedicated crowd. Luckily the skies cleared for the finals and the jib battle began. Skullcandy brought MFM up to DJ the event, with Portland's own Scotty The Body and of course, Dingo to announce the contest.
Despite the wet weather, all the P-town lurker shreds showed up for the social event of the season, held in the back alley of the U.S. Outdoor Store downtown. Cory Grove had free Cobra Dogs. The Neefuses had beards. Colin "CL Smooth" Langlois was down for some action. Leanne Pelosi and Jamie Anderson would probably breach their contract if they didn't show; Sherman and Chad Otterstrom likewise. Local bros like Stamps, Casillo and Prosser hung out and drank. Even Rossi TM Alex Pashley made the trip back to the PDX. It was pretty much like opening day...downtown.
Cobra Dog Mastermind and sometime snowboard-mag.com guest photographer Cory Grove.
There were several options when it came to public consumption. You have the Grenade favorite, "Smell the Glove" technique demonstrated here by Janae Twizznizzle.
Or there was the Rome SDS "Belches" program. And, of course, the standard Portland street bum classic, "the paper bag" used by Kevin Casillo. Check Gooner in back 'bout to wreck shit. This guy had a lot of flare. Almost too much. [MA] MFM likes music. [MA]
He kept the shit live all day long. GoonTown with the Mr. Slow Flow, Bob Marley extra-blunted butter steeze. [MA] Wide Shot. [MA] Nick Dirks got 2nd. [MA]
Ryan Thompson waits in the opening day lift line.
And makes it count.
Leanne and Jamie take the shortcut. Jamie threw down some good ones. [MA]
She's the best right now as far as I'm concerned. Well, let's just say she's rising high..she's lifted herself up...she's blazed her way past the competition. Okay, I'll stop. [MA] This girl's good too, Desiree Melancon. [MA] Crowd bros like free stuff. [MA]
Grenade's Jason Levins even got some Skullcandy headphones!
A Minnesota moment with Chad Otterstom and Mike Casanova. Not sure who this is but it's a nice shot from across the way. [MA] Bonfire founder Brad Steward. [MA] When it was over Champange got banged. [MA] Jed Anderson and Carrie Gallaway took the big checks home. [MA] This is pretty damn cute right here. [MA]
I think walking to a hotel downtown in any city USA after a rail jam in full snowboard gear is pretty fucking awesome. Jamie living the dream.
A long pit stop at the Ace Hotel, dinner with a wasted Prosser at the Cylde Common next door and it was off to The SomeDay Lounge. They have a sick Boondocks billboard right outside the front door. That is so dope, I was blown away. Act like you know.
Scotty Arnold and Josh Sherman taking advantage of the open bar.
MFM wasn't spinning no more but there was a guy jamming out on this keyboard. It wasn't bad actually, and the usual hipster heavy crowd was stoked.
They even had the sweet 80's laser globe thingy chillin' in a corner.
The best part was that I was kickin' it with Stoked Spicoli aka The Secret Weapon all night. But she's not going to be a secret for much longer—especially since Shaun White probably saw the Kits in Volume 2, Issue 6 of SNOWBOARD and had to look her up the last time he was in town. Well, that's all on the gossip tip for now. Big thanks to Matty Alberts, all the sponsors and Portland for still being the best city in America. |
