Alyeska Resort Opens with 130" of New Snow

Girdwood, Alaska –November 15, 2007 – With the 130 inches that fell since November 1, Alyeska Resort mountain crews have been hard at work preparing the upper-mountain for the first opening of the 2007-2008 season. The upper mountain boasts 84 inches of snow pack, while midway has 48 inches, and the base has 22 inches.

Last season Alyeska Resort broke an all-time record with over 283” of snow in the month of December alone. The final snowfall count for the 2006-07 season was 668” making Alyeska Resort one of the few resort to boast over 600” of annual snow.

The early heavy snowfall Alyeska Ski Area has received has created a flurry of activities on the mountain in the past week. Preparations have included extensive avalanche mitigation, prior to the finishing touches of grooming and signage to ensure safety of the guests.

This is going to be an incredible year for us,” says Rich Eidem, Ski Area General Manager. “We’ve completed the first phase of extensive remodeling of the mountain and the Resort. Snow-seekers of all stripes will enjoy zipping down the wider trails, and Resort guest will definitely delight in the new upgrades and amenities. With all of this new snow, it looks like the stars are aligning for a great ski season in Alaska.”

This summer saw an extensive $4.5 million mountain upgrade project also began this summer. Snowmaking extensions were added from the bottom of the mountain to the top of the tram, allowing Alyeska Resort to ready for top to bottom mountain access in November.

Further mountain improvements include a new learn to ride area, Magic Carpets installation, trail widening of major runs and a new ticketing system that will be brought online this winter, augmenting the speed and efficiency of access to services and facilities for guests.

In addition this summer also saw the refurbishment of Hotel Alyeska’s 304 luxury guest rooms. The $3.5M project included upgrading the furniture, bedding, carpeting and artwork in each room. Free wireless Internet is now available in all public spaces in the Resort, and High Speed Internet access is now available in each room.
