Many snowboarders seem to be under the misconception that Alta will eventually have to open its doors to boarders for financial and/or legal reasons. Not so. There are more than enough serious skiers (the type Alta has always attracted) who feel very strongly about being able to enjoy the slopes without having to worry about the danger and annoyance of reckless snowboarders. I ski Alta almost exclusively, but when I do stray over to Snowbird on a powder day, there are some things I can’t help noticing...things that are ever-present at Snowbird now. Things like always getting “taken out” by a snowboarder at least once during any given day, or the way snowboarders destroy traverses, or how a single snowboarder will in seconds lay waste to a beautiful run of uncut powder that could have been enjoyed by a dozen skiers who wouldn’t have crossed another skiers tracks. Skiers have a right to keep the last few blessed places where those things don’t happen.
Saying Alta discriminates against boarders is absurd. It’s like saying they discriminate against bobsledders. If other resorts make a mistake, it doesn’t mean Alta has a legal obligation to make the same mistake. Alta has always been, and will forever be for skiers. And Alta will continue to build its niche of skiers who want to ski the greatest ski resort in the world WITHOUT snowboarders.
If there is a God, Alta will forever remain FREE.
