With the season winding down, and so many Colorado Resorts closing, it's easy to get upset. This Saturday, instead of mourning the end of the season, students from colleges all over the state traveled to Echo Mountain for a day of happy shredding and school pride. There were over 70 kids geared up and ready to battle it out. CU Boulder, CU Denver, Colorado State, Western State and Northern Colorado were the represented schools.

The events started at noon in the Asylum tree Park, and the first feature was the log wall-ride. Some people seem to be confused about wall-rides because they ride up and coming strait back down and then look around thinking, “was I supposed to do something?” Luckily, after a few runs everyone had it down. The judges were looking for creativity on this feature, and that’s what they got. There were stalls, spins, falls, and flips, but the winning trick went out to a clean hand plant.

After the log wall-ride, the crew stopped to session the hitching post, also in the Asylum.

The events continued with a high ollie contest, where boarders literally ollied over a 13 year old’s head. It was pretty impressive.

There was a much-deserved food and drink break- thanks to Qdoba and the Boulder Freeride kids for grilling- but the day was just beginning. Early in the afternoon there was a Never Summer X-Box jam, and more jamming in the little park. The X-Box is rad because no one really knows what to do on it, so everyone tries something new. Some kids used it as a wall-ride, some riders board slid the whole thing, some attempted board slide transfers, some went classic with 50-50’s and there was even a kids who stomped a gainer / tame dog flip trick.

One more event was squeezed into the day before the Junkyard Battle Finalle. This was an Out Cold inspired King of The Mountain Event. Except it was during the day, and there was no beer, and no one got naked… so I guess it was more of a race than anything. I didn’t get any pictures of this because I was more concerned with getting out of the way and saving my life than getting a picture of the swarm of snowboarders crashing in as they finished.
The last event of the day was the Junkyard Battle. Which consisted of 3 rails, that pro. and amateur boarders sessioned. The riders had an hour to throw down while spectators cheered on (my camera conveniently died during this event, so sorry for the lack of photo’s). In the end riders from CU placed first in the pro and am. Division, but CSU took home the trophy for having the highest attendance. Props to Western state for not only killing it, but traveling so far to represent.
