Words by Tawnya Schultz/ Pics by Binky First off I must apologize for slacking and not having a post up sooner. I know; it’s not like me or us at all. Here’s the thing. Something so random happened this weekend at the West Coast Invitational after party while Talib Kweli was performing on stage. While Pancho was holding my camera and showing me a “memory card full” message since we had taken more than 100 photos that night some crazy guy jumped on stage attempting to stage dive. Well literally within a split second security grabbed the dude and bro went flying off the stage landing directly on Pancho who’s like half this guy’s size. Anyway Pancho somehow survived but my camera did not. It went flying as well vanishing within seconds. So I’m putting the word out. Someone has my Canon digi cam with tons of rail jam and Talib Kweli party photos. We pulled some pics together for ya though, courtesy of Binky, and here’s a brief rundown of what went down at this year’s W.C.I. in Mammoth Lakes, CA.
One name, Chas Guldemond, says it all. This boy is frickin’ on fire winning or at least highly placing in pretty much every big name and no name comp this season. Chas’ determination is what ultimately continues to earn him wins and in this case a minor 20 G’s in less than 48 hours. Although Chas is not the most technical of riders his drive to simply “go” twice as hard as any other makes him an obvious standout; not to mention he thinks outside the box often attempting tricks others simply don’t. So give DC and Rockstar poster boy, Mr. Guldemond, a round of applause, thumbs up, or booty shake for annihilating both the pipe and rail events.
The W.C.I. format is kind of a free for all but in a good way with no real regulations which is why it’s been such a popular event. The contestants themselves vote for the winners which seemingly relives some pressure and makes the win that much more meaningful. Of our crew only Gary made it to the pipe event on Friday but we were all there for the party Friday night at the one of only two bars in Mammoth, Laka Nuki. Ms. Jamie Anderson was in rare form cheersing to her pipe win that day and pinballing through the crowd. A bunch of the homies were in town- Eric Jackson, Danny Kass, Scotty Lago, Kevin Pierce, Molly Aguirre, M.F.M., Darrell Mathes, Tara Dakides, JJ Thomas, Louie Vito, the list goes on and on.
For the most part the weekend was sweet. Our spot at the new Westin above the village was awesome; the suite itself, the food (and mojitos) at the restaurant, not to mention the staff was ridiculously nice. They even brought a Heavenly dog bed for Gary’s little ones. So stay there and check it out next time you make it to the area. The mountain was also super duper fun. We were all stoked on the day and the park was precisely on point as usual. I’m not sure about the Mammoth wannabe locals anymore though. I used to thoroughly enjoy Mammoth when I was a visitor but man have things changed. Now everyone is on this “I live here, this is my town” kick. It’s lame to say the least and screw those of you who I’m talking about. Stop claiming Mammoth is your town and being lame assholes. Oh yeah and especially screw that beezy who threw her drink on Janae, K Deezy, and I. You suck.
Joey Sexton sweet 16. Or maybe 21? Now back to the event. The rail jam kicked off around 8 p.m. Saturday. Peeps congregated to the village to catch a glimpse of the pro rail shreds live and in color while most of us media personal kicked it at the 32 party in a suite overlooking the trick fest. Times were tough yes indeed. We also celebrated Joey Sexton’s 21st bday complete with two cakes and a food fight. After Chas took the win the masses headed up hill to Canyon Lodge on a dark gondola ride to party with Talib Kweli. Shit was sick…besides the camera incident of course. But we drank a lot and that was all that mattered at the time. We even found it in our exhausting lives to hit up the after party at Sushi Rei with DJ M.F.M. in the mix. See ya next year Mammoth; if you’re lucky.

so sick... so fun... into so drunk... so sick....
i must have made the drunken walk home both nights .... cuz gooner drove me to the bar...
HOOKERS AND BLOW!
Haha. I'm pissed I missed the WCI this year. It's always a good time/riot.
How did Lago get in the party? I thought his ID was in some bar's cash register in Valdez.
Hookers & Blow...I am damn proud to admit I took that photo!!!!
Basher, how you like my photo skills???? though at first glance it may look like 'Christian Motivational Speaker/BASE Jumper/Pro-Shred' Chris Bartimioli in the black and white SOLDIERS BRAND all-over print hoodie is holding the sign, but the sad and somewhat disturbing, or cool (depending on how you look at it) truth is that a little kid, no more than 7 years old was on his dad's shoulders holding this sign all night watching the rail jam. Now either that means you have a much more readily available, and unassuming means of supply & distribution for Hookers & Blow in mammoth, (e.g who pins a 7 year old as a Pimp and a Hustler in a ski town?) or this kid's dad is simply over his 7 year old, and he set up to get rolled by the feds!
You can bet that's not the last time you'll see that photo...as long as binky gives me back my memory card!
Thanks to Oren & Mammoth for a sick event, Benny Wisner for hooking me up w/tickets and a place to stay, Gary, Tawnya & Pancho cuz this mag is the best, Dingo for the embarrassing shout out prior to the start of the rail jam, and last but not least, thanks to Binky for looking so damn good in the 08-09 SOLDIERS BRAND 'dots' jacket.
yea yea yea... that one photo was yours....
and there are a couple more that arent mine but i think Gary and Deezy kicked a couple pics down too... hey i couldnt resist... it was a good photo and id rather use the one you took so you feel so inclined to post on my nice set of pictures... when in reality you only took the photo because Chris was there in the hoodie i have been relentlessly rocking all year...
How come all the shots you took of me in that sexy Soldiers Dot jacket were blurred... i see i see... you shoulda seen me stuntin in that Blazer again.. i'm gonna need a few more of those... thats my new party steeze...
I had a great weekend as well down at the WCI... I want to thank Oren Tanzer, Chris Zajek, Pete Colombo, Mark Ankenbauer, Super Rookie, Heather Hensler, Jeremy Cooper, Sam Poffley, and everyone else at Mammoth Mt.... It was a great weekend once again and a great party at Canyon and Sushi Rei... see you guys next year...
