Those of you who know about Wolf Creek are aware of the powder potential the resort holds. In what was my first visit to the small resort (if you call 1600 acres small), my eyes were opened to the serious snow that is Wolf Creek. Nestled in the San Juan region of the Southern Rockies, Wolf Creek sits in its own weather system.

If you draw a circle with a 20-mile radius around Wolf Creek, it can be dry, completely snow-less. But, that doesn't matter, because the resort's lifts will get you directly to probably the best snow you will ever ride.

Monday evening, our editor, Larry Nuñez had a great idea. After watching the weather systems over Southern Colorado, it was time for our first Wolf Creek trip. From what the forecast was looking like, it was sure to be epic, as it always is.

We hit the road early Tuesday morning, and six hours later, we were driving through a pounding blizzard. We were there. Deep times call for reverse-camber. Larry had his Skate Banana, Dave Grigsby had his favorite board, the K2 Turbodream, and I had my favorite powder board of all-time...the K2 Gyrator.

Griggs...ready.

Run #1

We ducked into some trees...

...and Larry and Grigsby endoed instantly. Come to find out, the snow was insanely deep. Avtually, it was too deep. We muscled our way through the trees, and ended up in the middle of a meadow. Damn... This is how deep the snow was.

Ten minutes later, we were back on piste. Thank God. Change of plans. We needed steeper. We changed lifts, and seeked out some steep trees. Grigsby, getting some well-earned turns.

Larry, bat outta hell.

Wolf Creek has more rollers, wind lips and gullies than almost anywhere else. There's something to jump off of around every turn. We found this poppy wind lip double. Super fun.

The typical sight. No one, and it's dumping.

A poor man's snack. Dollar biscuit, crammed with condiments.

Enough for one day. After the long drive, fighting our way through bottomless snow (I'm not complaining, I promise), and the lifts closing, it was time to retire. Wolf Creek is in the middle of nowhere, so a drive back to South Fork was in order. We grabbed a room at the Allington Inn, got changed, and headed down the street to the Hungry Logger for a wholesome meal, and to get in touch with the local flavor.

Service with a smile, and free pool? You betcha! The Nuggets lost to the Rockets, my pool shots were off by a mile, but all-in-all, a great evening.

The next morning, it was on again. Snowing in South Fork means that it's hammering up at Wolf Creek.

...and was it ever.

The snow that was too deep the day before had received another foot over night. Luckily, it had settled a bit, so speeds were up, and smiles were wide.

Grigsby, little dropper.

Ripping tree runs for hours.

Larry, deep.

Grigsby.

Again, no one.

You like trees?

Larry and I. Happily exhausted.

Dump city. Population: 0

Lunch time. We had been riding hard all morning, and it was time to recharge. Wolf Creek has this lunch special deal, where they have a different special each day. Wednesday's was chicken stir fry, with a choice of dessert. I went with the peach pie, and a side of hot cocoa and marshmallows. Oh yeah!

We had made arrangements to meet up with Wolf Creek's president Davey Pitcher. He grabbed his board, and we were back at it. This time, with the ultimate tour guide.

Again...tree action.

My token method shot.

Davey showed us the goods, and we ended up closing down the best day of resort riding any of us has had in a long while.
Special thanks goes out to Kat in the Wolf Creek ticket office and Davey Pitcher, for all the stories about Wolf Creek's past, present and future. We can't wait for our return trip.
