Maybe I was younger or whatever, but it doesn't seem like the riders today make as deep a mark on the sport as these greats have. Is it because todays greats are just too new to the game and ten years from now everyone will say, 'who are the next Kass, Rice and White?' I am not sure. When Jamie Lynn busted out in Pocahontas, it kind of changed the way I looked at snowbarding. Do any of the riders today do that?
Good question...
the style of Jamie Lynn is unmatched.
Terje = Shaun (sad but true)
Peter is so unique that he will have to completely fade away from the sport before someone can take his place.
Time will tell. but unfortunatley the insurgance of the corperate side of snowboarding might just ruin any chance of a new Jamie Lynn or Peter Line,
and Terje too, because the World Cup Circuit isn't what it once was. that guy won everything for 3 years strait.
or maybe i am stuck in the past and way to jaded to see things like a 14 year kid does, reading the mags and watching the movies free from all the hype and politics.
Romain De Marchi, Travis Rice
Romain De Marchi, Travis Rice, Devun Walsh, Gigi Ruf, Danny Kass
of course there will never be
of course there will never be another peter, jamie or Terje, but i know what you mean
Times are different now in snowboarding but i think Nicolas Muller is up there, his style is unmistakeable. Nico makes me want to ride everytime i see him on video, and i look forward to his parts every year.
T-Rice is on an entirely new level, he is doing crazy stunts and i have no doubt that his name will be mentioned along with Peter, Jamie etc in the future
it's subjective
Don't get me wrong, I think Romain and T Rice are pushing the level.
however I think its hard to be "the next originator" like PL, Jaime and Terje, cause those are some huge shoes to fill. Those guys had the opourtunity to change the sport and how it was percived. What options do todays pros have? Fly further? Spin faster? Sure it's cool to watch, but not exactly ground breaking stuff.
(ok Romains 1/2 pipe gap at the US open was pretty sick)
Just my 2¢
the next?
Practically everybody looks the same to me these days. This is at least partly due to the fact that every jump is so huge that the rider is a spinning spec of darkness against white, but not entirely. People get so good so fast these days that they're spinning off cliffs and learning cripplers in the pipe before they learn how to do a decent method. Perhaps the level of riding is so high technically that people don't have time to develop any individual style along the way. Super tech tricks are also harder to make look distinctive than simpler ones. Practically everybody who can do them looks the same spinning a 1080, but an alley-oop or something is a different matter.
I would definitely agree that
I would definitely agree that a significant portion of the snowboard community have bypassed the basics in search of another rotation. However, you cannot watch Absinthe's Pop and not say those guys are rocking new level style. I thought the craziest thing on that video was Romain's frontside 3 in the Alaska section. That's some pretty steep terrain and he pokes it out and rotates slow and smooth. I have ridden some pretty steep stuff and it is insane to bring that kind of style into play. I think for that reason Romain will be up there with the greats. Gigi's backside 180 to start his section just makes me want to ride like Terje's Stoney Baloney in The Garden.
style
I haven't seen Pop. Romain and Gigi do have good style, though. Those two do stand somewhat apart from the crowd. Ingemar and PL where are two guys who where spin innovators who still had really distinct styles, so it's definately true that you can drop serious spins with style.
pop
Okay, I've seen it now. There really is a lot of amazing snowboarding in that video. I was really suprised by how good the riding was in it, actually. The AK lines that some of those guys are doing, mixing technical freestyle with serious exposure is really nuts.
Plus, Ingemar!

i totally agree with that post..
there's something that has faded with the years.. what we used to call the soul. Back when i started i would get so stoked to see michi albin do a method between 2 trees full of snow.. i only wanted to ride for the fun of it. Everybody at the mountain was friendly because people that were snowboarding were unique. now we're just doing the fastest growing sport ever known on this planet. more people riding = more talents. more talents = more riders in comps.. which makes it totally harder for riders to get away from the masses.. with parks getting bigger and bigger, you get riders that are on the top of their game for one or 2 years and then they hurt themselves and are forced to stop riding.
A lot of riders also means a whole lot of friggin snowboard videos.
back then there was only MDP, standard and FLF standing strong. Now, we see high quality videos coming from everywhere in the world! This allows us to see that there are a lot of very talented riders. which means that there's not a lot of place for a single person to rise as an Icon just like Peter, Jamie and a bunch of other riders were.
This my friend is the pure result of the popularity of our sport that has been growing forever..
you can only hope that when it will fall back down, you'll be lucky enough to keep on riding and not jump on the next bandwagon that will catch everybody's attention.
to come back to my title..
for those of you missing the old days.. the Best of TB series DVD that came out last winter and got a lot ignored (at least in my region of the world) is one if not, THE best video i've ever owned.. you should get it. it features mostly everybody that has influenced what we love to do!
that's it my friends. i'm now off to the icy slopes
of small saint.bruno resort!
have a nice night!

That's the only video I got last year. Tons of good stuff, but I never liked the Hachet bros. style. They suceeded early on because they where the only guys shooting real film. I wish I'd been appointed the official editor of their legacy, because they're sitting on so much gold. Good lord, the music is awful. Also, I really was hoping that they'd have full parts archived in their original form. PL's part to the Gwar song, and Terje's part from TB 2 are two of the most epic parts ever.
true
true.. i was kind of disappointed about the lack of extras on the dvd.
but the vid is great anyway..
i dont dislike the soundtrack that much either..

I am you and you are me and we are all the same
New generation
I think that riders like Marc Frank and as mentioned, Danny Kass serve the same purpose for the kids today that that those riders had for us. Many of the young pros today would probably mention people like them as idols before Terje, Peter and Jamie. I bet half of them don't even know who Jamie Lynn is. No time will ever be the same. Marco's got some steez though.
Those are some big shoes
Those names pretty much wrap up the sport of snowboarding in the 90's. PL, Lynn escpecially Terje were my idols and gods. Each time I watched a video segment or flipped thru the zines it was their footage that made me want to grab my board and rock and roll. I have to agree with alot of the other comments and say that it is really hard to stand out in the crowd with the level of game these new riders are bringing to the mountains. Granted they can all throw down super tech tricks, but there are only so many ways you can spin a 1080. It was the gods of the 90's that really gave snowboarding the shove down the mountain and from there it just continued to snowball, but who is really innovating?? Mr. White?? The kid definetley rips, but until there is a trick called the White flip give me Terje, Jamie, and Peter. The superstars today will never be like the superstars of yesterday.
I remember when Daniel Franck came out with the rodeo, and Terje busted out the Haakon flip, that is what will always stick out in my mind as what snowboarding is.
I really think that David Ben
I really think that David Benedek and Travis Parker are 2 of the most talented snowboarders I've ever seen. Also some snowboarders that I like to watch are Scotty Wittlake, Corey Smith, and Lukas Huffman. But I really think David Benedek is one of the top 5 snowboarders today and probably one of the top 10 best ever.
kevin young
jumpingjoe, actually it was kevin young that invented the rodeo, not frank.
