I just was remeniscing about the Early nineties when Snowboarding was pure. CIRCA 1992
After viewing such incredible pieces of film such as Critical Condition, Snowboarders in Exile, New Kids on the Twock, TB1; I realized the futility of going to work in the office ever again. I rented a flat in Red Lodge Montana, acquired a Sims 1580 half-pipe from Noah Salasnek, and a pow board Morrow Multi-Pro 174 (purchased at Pacific Drive) got some packages to sell later from Tijuana, tuned up the CIVIC and peeled out to hit up Pow in Montana.
Something happened on the way- I stopped for gas in Summit County and went in to a little shitty bar called the Gold Pan Saloon in Breckenridge. Unbenounced to me that very night, I slung a few sacs and met Mikey, MAra, Trish Powell, Edwin, and some other people. They said crash here tonight and come ride at Copper with us tomorrow.
The next day, I showed up at Copper early, jonesing to meet up with the crew and get to some real riding in.
I was blown away! These guys were RIPPING. S chair,S cornice, Stump of manhood, Flyer, G roller man!!! A trees, Onion roll, Fetus, lower cat gap,, INcredible....
Montana -- I dont think so. I am staying here!!
I rented a little cottage in Frisco for a week with some of the free money I was makin-The little pink plant place on Fifth and Main.!
I walked across the street to get my board tuned that night for the first time at SBR- 10 steps away-- and I walked right into the middle of the birth of the jib movement!. I didn't know them then but Jake Blattner was in there beveling his edges and talking with Tarquin Robbins, Ron Baird, Richie Whittlock, and ANdy DAvidson about reducing the tip lengths of their boards and getting wider stance and mounting options to the then slim 19 inch stance patterns given to us by the first B5 hole pattern.. I proceeded to the back of the shop and was greeted by a short hairy man (Gunslinger Jim) that asked me immediately where I was from. "CALI", I said proudly.. He asked if i had any ganj to trade out for the incredible tune he was gonna give me. I showed up the next day unknowingly, my brand new SIMS halfpipe 1580 had been not only tuned, cut down, bevelled and T bolted to a stout 24 inch stance now mounted duck-footed, but Jim had also taken the liberty of "HOOKING me UP" with a custom paint job....WHAT!!!@#$$. I was floored and somewhat mad at the time, But- Jim waded thru the twenty or thirty cut board tips and tails he had cut down the previous night to hand me my stick and I have to say, I was impressed. The base was immaculate and perfectly waxed to temperature. the paint job was a tricolor rasta fade vertically oriented with a new SBR sticker placed perfectly between the feet. When I got to Copper I traded a half of a Subway cold-cut-combo to the mellowest looking lifty for my second day of Colorado shredding. Gunslinger Jim had hooked me up Fat Style..I was buttering knowls, and ollieing stumps higher than ever, trying spins. I started following the growing Copper Posse thru the trees from shack to shack and having a fucking riot doing it. I went to O'Sheas at the bottom of the Flyer after riding that day and asked if a place like this has any night time positions open, I was hired on the spot and that was it. I was now a Colorado rider!
Who cared about the rental in Montana? I had a bunch of money I was makin already here and shit 1992 was a good snow year even early season. PLus I found a sick A-frame in Blue River for 100 bucks a month.
( Thanks Snail, Trey, BOO9 )

Okay, okay. Now you got the Underground in there. Can't forget about Man B. By the way, you can't win the best blog contest Gary.
I got a prize...
I have a prize for ya, Gary. You got deep. That was real. I dig reading stuff like this. Back in 92, I was stuck on the East side. I had to read about all of this stuff going on, and dreamed about it--nonstop. I still do, day in and day out. I can't wail 'till the next time I can strap in, and slip downhill. Shredding in the living room is getting old, and doesn't really offer too many rewards. It's funny...sixteen seasons, and still like a little kid on Christmas eve. I love it. Oh yea, Gary, I got your favorite, most ultimate board for you, but we're going to have to take more trips together, just to reminisce about the good 'ol days even more. Thanks for the great story.
-Mike
i'm getting a little misty eyed
There was definately something about that place; one of the only times that you can wake up every day and be stoked with every aspect of your life. Just stepping outside and taking a deep breath of fresh air and seeing all the mountains and trees, watching the weather chanel 24/7... great memories. A few people that deserve a shout: Andy "Miles" Merwin. City Market's star employee and one of Summit Co.'s dopest, most low key riders; thanks for the "local's discount" at check out Andy. Another is Scott Shumsky, a good friend to everybody and the biggest bar brawler of all time! One morning while working at the Undergrownd I was turning on the lights and doing the morning shit when I see a board bag on the boot fitting bench start moving. Sure enough it was Shum using it as a sleeping bag, he didn't make it back to Placer Valley the night before and crashed out in the store. Classic. Another is John Gordon "Stip" Stipanella; thanks for the dope appartment above Mountain Java, unbelievable view, I wish I could have stayed longer.
Anyone who has thought about picking up and moving to a mountain town, do it. You will have the best time of your life. Great blog Gary, I still have my black Seedless pants with the camo band around the leg.
Respect....
Stip is mentioned in my blog. I think.
I thought i shouted out to Shumsky to..
Big up to the PURPLE WOOLY BUGGERS.....

great story, gary. thanks for the flashback.
breck was a place way, way ahead of it's time (and i guess, still is)- open minded/progressive managment, always great parks, the tdk world cup, the old tree jib lines, good apres, hot boulder and regis girls...good days.

Respect where deserved
I read this comment and got all pumped....unlike you I was about 13 in 92 and had just started snowboarding...I first went to breckenridge in 94 and counted the hours till I could ditch school and move out west...I moved to that town to catch the end of this in 96 fresh with my GED. but was lucky enough to get to know a handful of the people mentioned above. Chris Ferris taught me everything about the snowboard world from a business side and I would not be whee I am today without him...I woud talk to Drago everyday for years at the coffee shop and even remeber him serving me up beers when I was just 18 at the pool hall..he always had a table waiting for us right next to the bar..I moved west looking up to the likes of the wastells, wells , franzen, mikey etc etc etc..This list goes on...
I spent 6 years there and would not trade one..so with that I give my up most respect to the guys that where there before me and paved the way...
Friends I will never let go away..
RIP---Chris Ferris.

You can thank Rich Christie for that and a little (very little) help from me. We were really into our little scene (Nor Cal Players) and trying our best to bump bagels with those Summit Co. hoes. I pissed off DEK for stealing Jody away from him but as I told him once " Your not the shit....I'm the shit". I really don't miss him at all, in fact I'm glad screw loose Bruce butt f--ked him!

PS - Last I heard Rich was a golf pro in SF, and surfing everyday.
CONOCO
you forgot all the five finger discounts late nite conoco runs.
That's nothing...
At shitty markup (city market) I did not need Andy or Ron's help when I was poor. The truckasoarus pants from Wave Rave was all I needed. I was crafty all right, made sure the gators were locked down and proceeded to shop with the cart. I then would just pull the front open a bit and drop in fine meats, Gillette razors (Hale's favorite thing to steal) and whatever else I needed. A full 15 pounds later I would walk out claiming I forgot my wallet and headed for the gulch to divide the goods at the cabin. I never got popped, manager Bill was to busy checking bulges from out of towners in their too tight of powder pants and moon boots.
I love this thread, thanks G Dog!

And the rumor of Screw Loose doing a 50/50 all the way up it and over to the next cat track. I bet he still believes he did that. One of my favorite memories is Kurt W. knocking out that world cup skier that hip checked me coming into the lift line on peak 10 - That ruled!

today, there was virtually nobody around but us. the chair up to the top was ghostly, ducking in and out of snow squalls.
i followed my friends over to an area called 'the aspens'. as we strapped in, i looked down into the woods. there was nothing but fresh, un-touched snow. we all looked at each other and raced for first tracks.
when i went to breckenridge for the first time in 87 or 88, i saw these two guys un-loading flite boards off the rack of their white bronco-like truck. these bros had huge smiles and were laughing while high-fiving each other. today was that kind of day for us.

88?
LJJ,
That was my first time there as well, I competed in the Swatch world championships along with Rankin. I did really well there and fell in love with Summit Co. In fact I remember while I made the finals in the Mogul comp down Mach 1, off to the side was Rankin doing some super fly backflips on this hit wearing a white Team Kidwell hoody.
One day it dumped during the slalom comp and I had a great advantage as it turned into a banked course with soft snow. As I was flexing in the start, the bitter cold snapped my Sims baseplate and I had to withdraw from the race. I was bummmed but Booterman handed me some blue camo, I downed the tab and we had an epic day riding pow, and of all places C chair was going off! With endless energy we rode the last chair up and was throwing down the mountain with complete domination as the sky turned dark and gray. Thanks Neil....
Did you go to that comp LJJ? The politics there with the comp were a complete joke - Way too many barnies!
Jonny B.

no, i never went to the comp-i am not that good on a snow stick. i just like to dork around.
i wish i had gone, though. that would have been cool to have seen all you guys rip it up.

Myself,Brandon,Sean and Deron, were in a contest to see who could hold out the longest, while at Frisco nordic center, living out of Ford Escort and a Nissan Sentra, Dumping snow on OCT 5th 1989.
While looking through the SUMMIT DAILY NEWS for somewhere to rent, three weeks later , We came out a winner. It was cheap, only $550 a month between me and 3 bro's. Concidering each of us had about $700 each, from the time we left the small town of Traverse City Micigan. We thought we were in heaven, and we were. Snowboarding every day, learning the mountain terrain. It was so differnt back then. from just riding jumps back in MI. to navigating through trees.and trying to impress the 6 girls that lived in Breck at the time. SOMEHOW we all managed to live throught that and what great years the have been. Thanks, Steve Winter,Shelby,Cristine,Jody,Wendy,N.Y.Jay-1,Eon,Brendon,East Coast Joe(murphys law always rules). YOU ARE THE SCENE.
Hey Thanks...
For putting Mack Dawg and I up for those 4 or 5 days the second time I came round while filming Pocahuantis. Nice trailer you all had in the gulch, Hale, your bro ,and A Brown filling up the seams. I can't even remember how we hooked up with you guys but you and your crew had much to do with me leaving Nor Cal for that god foresaken glacier. Good on ya Aleshire......We'll tip one back soon old boy.
