The ASR (Action Sports Retailer) Trade Show went down this weekend and the whole SNOWBOARD magazine crew was on hand for all the action. Movie premieres, open bars and girls galore always make San Diego a good time, and it was even more exciting for us this year because Issue 1, Volume 2 made its big debut. Everyone was stoked on the new mag and showed us a lot of love, here's a quick rundown of the weekend.
Thursday night none of us were actually there yet...we were busy making Issue 2. But K2 team manager Ryan Runke, always in the mix, sent us a few pics from the TWS Rider's Poll Awards. One of SNOWBOARD's favorites, Leanne Pelosi took home the Rider of the Year award, while Runke took home a digi camera soaked with booze.
Kicking off the ASR premieres Friday night: the Mack Dawg and Standard Films at Spreckles. We all made it to town at different times: Pancho and Baker by plane, J2 and Mark via sport loops in Nevada, and Gary, Drago and Caroline by rickshaw. It was fun to see everyone again and just kick it out front.
Then it was on to the Misschief Films' ...AsIf premiere at longtime ASR party hot spot, Ole Madrid. Notorious for meathead bouncers and strict codes, this place is known to get rowdy. Fence hoppin, bracelet trades and occasional beat downs are common.
Tara Dakides wished Pancho a happy birthday out front, then luckily Tooz and Ninja pulled us all in VIP style with the quickness. The party was the place to be with all the Misschief girls like Amber Stackhouse, Annie Boulanger and Lexi Waite in the house.
By last call we were all seeing blurry, and the night ended shirtless in the streets. Like the Von Zipper shirts said..."Stay Classy, San Diego".
The next day at the Trade Show, we cruised around, said what up to our advertisers and checked out the insane ASR promo overload. There's WAY too much going on at this thing to see it all...Volcom always has a funny theme, and Sessions was giving away free tattoos. There was a cool Powell Peralta art exhibit, with legends like Steve Caballero hanging out. There were dugs with doogins out front, and lots and lots of California "Gurlz."
Saturday night began with the DC Mtn. Lab DVD premiere party at the new House of Blues downtown. All the major players were there to see the promo video, which ended up being the only one that all of us got to see. It was rad; SNOWBOARD is backin this one. The perfect snowboard video, it's fun to watch and makes you want to go ride. Make sure and hit up your local shop for a copy.
Finally, it was on to Grenade's Smell the Glove premiere at 4th and B. This is the only SNOWBOARD magazine sponsored video, and that's just fine with us. The Grenerds deliver again with a sick soundtrack, gnarly handrails and banger booter shots - all mixed with parodied Spinal Tap skits starring the charismatic Grenerds themsevles.
Retard Riot came out after the movie and successfully emptied a packed room of over 1,000 people within minutes. Fans left: Billy Anderson, Zimmerman, Casillo, Matt and Nicole Kass and a few other loyal devotees. Grenade rules, congrats on another successful movie and party.
Everyone had a blast; Baker took it a little too far. Expected for a Grenade party. The next day at the trade show, the jubilent horns and flying rock salt at the Volcom booth had faded into a slow polka for everyone still standing.
That night, we hit up Pokez for some authentic SoCal mexican food and celebrated our one year publishing anniversary. Thank you to everyone for all the support along the way, we couldn't do it without you. We hope all of our readers enjoy the new magazine.
