Well with the approach of winter coming and summer ending what better thing to do than go fishing. But this wasn’t going to be my normal bass or trout fishing excursion, this was for the big ones. So off I went to hotel Palmas de Cortez in La Paz for a 3 day trip. Now I wasn’t too sure about this type of fishing, by that I mean heavy line and heavy tackle. I prefer finesse fishing light line with light tackle. But I wanted to catch a fish big enough to give me a good fight and this I would regret it. First things first you got to catch bait for the day so off we go to catch some giant squid. When you catch a Giant squid it feels like your pulling up a 20 pound bag filled with water with an occasional pull back from the squid. When I got the giant squid to the surface next to the boat I got a good soaking of water from it. Squid use water to propel them threw the water, they suck it up and spit it out so when it came up it pointed it self right at me and completely got my whole upper body wet, well at least it wasn’t ink. We got our bait and were off to start trolling for some fish and it didn’t take long before when we had a big Dorado on. One jump, two jumps, pop! he came off but that didn’t matter, it was on like donkey Kong. I was so pumped up after that. They said it was a trophy size Dorado at around 80 pounds.

Then there was a sound in the air which took me a while to figure out but then it clicked, or should I say it was the screaming of the line peeling off the reel. It was a sailfish and it's over a 100 pounds and its taking line off the reel so fast I can smell it. Jump after jump this fish did not want to give up but eventually all that jumping did it in and I was holding a 110 pound sailfish.
No time to rejoice cause in no time we were staring at a blue marlin at over 500 pounds chasing our jigs, but he was just looking. As fast as you could blink your eye our deck hand was at the back of the boat fly lining live bait on the surface right in that fishes face. For about 5 seconds we had that fish hooked but it wasn’t meant to be. To see that size of a fish behind your boat chasing your jigs is amazing. It is just this dark mass in the water moving side to side checking things out, it was cool. After a little bit more trolling we spotted a school of porposes at which the captain asked us if we wanted to catch some yellow fin tuna, ah yeaah! From what he told us the larger tuna like to follow underneath the school of dolphin. Within minutes I was in a battle with an 85 pound tuna and all I could think about was sushi. You see if you catch a tuna the restaurant at the hotel will serve it sashimi style for you with white onions some soy sauce and even some sriracha sauce, mmm...mm...good. Because of that this fish was not getting away. After the first 5 minutes my back was starting to get sore and after 10 minutes I couldn’t feel the pain anymore but I knew I was going to pay for this one later. It took me 30 minutes to get that fish in and it was like a freight train for all of that time and finally I was done. I don’t care how good of shape you might think you’re in, a fish that size will put an ass whooping on anyone. So it was now time to head back to the hotel for some well deserved drinks, tuna sashimi and rest.

The whole trip was amazing from the swim up bar, to the hotel and to the fishing. If your into fishing this place is a must try. Me, my dad and brother ended up catching some Dorado, sailfish, trigger fish and some striped marlin. We all had a great time this summer fishing in La Paz.
Good work!
Nice trip. Sounds like it was a great time down there. Great fish, too. That's a good way to cap off the summer. I bet that sushi tasted pretty good after what must have been a Hell of a fight. The Saki bombs probably took some attention away from the aching arms and back, huh?
sounds like an amazing trip
Nice work. Sounds like an awesome way to wind down your summer. Just, next time you go, invite me.
Yeah
those pics are nice. I want to do that someday.

it is nice having a job with benefits and paid vacations and stuff, but my grandpa just died and he was an avid fisherman so he had planned to have my grandma send me, my brother and dad on this trip...
