Everyone has a board that they incredible memories from riding. That is a large part of the reason why I collect snowboards, many of which have accompanied me on my best days. Probably my favorite was one of my first. This goes way back but it was a Storm board made by Neil Daffern.
I was looking for a freestyle board, and there wasn't much to choose from, this is the same year as the first burton air, tri-angle board. The only ones available were the sims kidwell and Barfoot twin tip. I called Ken Ach's Snoboard Shop in Calgary. Ken talked me into buying the storm site unseen. So I bought it over the phone. WHen it arrived. I was so stoked. It was bright metalflake blue with a red base emblazened by the storm lightning bolt. It must have had over an inch of camber (due, I found out later to Neil hand sanding each ply of the flat lam to make them thinner at the ends.) Supposidly it was made in the same mold as the original Barfoot Twintips (not actually twin, but more directional than rocket.) featured in the January 1987 issue of ISM. It road great and weighed a ton less than the kidwell . I got my first powder day on that board. Learned to ride fakie on it and grab rocket, cross rocket etc.Heck that was the season Bridges and I became friends.
For me, that board had allot to due with me becoming a snowboarder.
So to Neil Daffern who made it and Ken Ach who talked me into it, thank you.
I am sure many of you have had boards that have had an impact on your lives. It could be a Burton Custom or even a swap meet special, the important thing is that the board made a mark on you and left some indelible memories.
Burton Woody 145
It came down to a Burton Woody 145 or a Mistral. both used for about 45 bucks each.
I had been riding my neigbors kemper kid and loved it. so my mom decided she was going to buy me a board. i remember looking at both boards and wanting the mistral because it had metal edges. but my mom thought otherwise.
she picked me up from 7th grade and told me she bought the burton. I was so pissed. i think i yelled at her. but when i got home and saw the board i was stoked. i rode it in the backyard that night with 2" of snow on grass.
i still have my woody 145, and i know if i had gotten that mistral i would have trashed it years ago.
that is my 1st and favorite board. complete with those platic 1 piece binding with nylon straps with those crappy plastic clips.
Lamar Workshop/Partnership
I was up at the mountain the other day and I saw a Lamar/Alien Workshop Partnership. That would be a cool board to get your hands on.
Boards or Boards People rode that Changed Snowboarding
For my day these were the coolest boards around
Can't think of any more at the moment
