Ana Rumina Wins the 2008 European Nikita Chickita

At last year's Nikita Chickita Ana Rumiha competed and made it to the women's finals, narrowly missing out on a podium place, finishing 4th. This year the judges all confirmed she was the clear winner, busting out some consistent and stylish runs. Her final run comprised a backside 180, frontside 360 indy and she was the only girl who bonked the tree with a nice frontside 180, finishing off with a frontside 360 on the wall. She claimed 1st place, 1,000 Euros prize money and the coveted one-year Nikita contract.

$10,000 in Terrain Park Upgrades at Perisher Blue

8 May 2008 - To further cement Perisher Blue’s reputation as providing the leading terrain parks in Australia, the resort has committed to pouring $10,000 into terrain park upgrades for the upcoming 2008 season.

The investment will deliver impressive new features including an S-box, table box, battleship box and an 8m round bar rail. There may also be a new 12m down flat down rail. New beginner features will also be added in the Columbia Fun Park on Mt Piper to provide ultimate progression for emerging freeriders.

According to Matt Klemm, Grooming Manager for Perisher Blue, “12m of the longest rail known as the Dragon’s Tail (a 12m dipper rail) may also make a comeback alongside the popular Ride Wall and the 40ft Rainbow Rail.” If this jargon sounds incomprehensible, these types of features can be viewed at fusionparks.com.au.

Snow Sports Product Sales Records Strong Growth at Retail for 2007-08 Season to Almost $3 Billion

McLean, VA (May 8, 2008) -- The snow sports products market grew by $280 million to reach $2.97 billion for the 2007.08 season, up from approximately $2.69 billion in all channels last season. Equipment sales were relatively flat in specialty shops and chain stores but increased by more than $40 million in online sales. Apparel sales increased by more than $100 million with snowboard tops and parkas selling very well in all channels. Kurt Widen, KJUS USA COO says, “The US market is challenging especially in these difficult economic times. However, snowfall is a great equalizer in our market, and early snowfall in the 07/08 ski season helped jump start sales in our segment. This along with strong sell through and continued growth in awareness of our relatively young brand positioned us well for the 08/09 order season where we saw a 27% increase over last year.”

Healthy sales of helmets, goggles and snowshoes led increases in accessories sales that grew by $64 million this season in specialty shops and online. “It’s hard to imagine a better season in the accessories business. We sold out of helmets and our goggle supply was similarly tight thanks to a season where every region had record snowfall and every resort was open,” states Blair Clark, SMITH Optics, Sr. VP, Marketing and Sales.

First off I must apologize for slacking and not having a post up sooner. I know; it’s not like me or us at all. Here’s the thing. Something so random happened this weekend at the West Coast Invitational after party while Talib Kweli was performing on stage. While Pancho was holding my camera and showing me a “memory card full” message since we had taken more than 100 photos that night some crazy guy jumped on stage attempting to stage dive. Well literally within a split second security grabbed the dude and bro went flying off the stage landing directly on Pancho who’s like half this guy’s size. Anyway Pancho somehow survived but my camera did not. It went flying as well vanishing within seconds. So I’m putting the word out. Someone has my Canon digi cam with tons of rail jam and Talib Kweli party photos. We pulled some pics together for ya though, courtesy of Binky, and here’s a brief rundown of what went down at this year’s W.C.I. in Mammoth Lakes, CA.

The Rome SDS Magic Bus Lands in Mammoth

After a long time on the road, a bunch of fun days shredding with riders from Seattle to Tahoe, guitar sessions, a few mishaps with starter motors and baseball bats, the Magic Bus and its unkempt crew of inhabitants rolled into Mammoth Mountain on Monday for the final stop of the tour. The road’s been long, and will be missed, but it was nice to post up for a few days without anywhere to go.

Rockstar Energy Drink Snow Athletes Take Down Competition at WCI 2008

Mammoth Lakes, CA. May 2-3, 2008 –The Rockstar Energy Drink snowboarders, Jamie Anderson and Chas Guldemond, take Mammoth by storm this year as they charged their way to 1st in the Vans Fiesta de la Pipe competition. Pros and Ams, young and old tried to show their steeze for the $20,000 purse in this open session jam format to be crowned pipe queen and king of 2008. The Unbound crew jibbed out the 16-foot pipe with candy piñatas and crazy features to start the party as the riders flipped, twisted, and planted their way to the bottom. Chas gave props to the Mammoth crew, saying that “the format was creative and fun to hang out with his friends and peers for the BBQ style comp.” This end of season “last chance for cash” was judged by the riders, making this victory twice as sweet for the Rockstar Energy Drink crew who were up against the best in the biz.

Chas Guldemond crushed the pipe for 1st place and $5,000 on Friday with teammate Jamie Anderson grabbing the girls’ 1st place crown and $2,000 prize. After taking first at the 2008 Roxy Chicken Jam Slopestyle competition in March and sealing her fate as the 2008 TTR World Tour Title winner, Jamie Anderson was up against a very competitive Molly Aguirre and Elena Height. On Saturday, Guldemond went back-to-back as he snagged the $10,000 1st place prize and bragging rights for the WCI Rail Jam 2008. Chas zigged, zagged, and stomped his way down the custom built three-and-a-half story tall custom jib setup. His solid stylie moves proved victorious again as he beat out the best in the industry for the second day in a row.

Lower Emissions, Sensible Car Parking Under New Plan at Coronet Peak

Incentives to car pool, disincentives to drive alone and hitching posts are all part of the Coronet Peak Vehicle Reduction Plan to be introduced this winter.

The plan is designed to help reduce demand for car parking on the mountain while also reducing fuel consumption.

Under the plan, parking facilities are being sourced at the base of Coronet Peak road and at Arthur’s Point to facilitate carpooling. Hitching posts are to be established on the outskirts of Queenstown and at the base of the access road. As an incentive to people to carpool or pick up hitchhikers, single only drivers arriving after 8.30am will be required to park in a lower car park and will need to then use the car park shuttle to get to the base building.

Second Phase of Construction Begins With Trans-Atlantic Sailing of Cable Spools

WHISTLER, BC, May 7, 2008 – After a snowy six month hiatus, construction on Whistler Blackcomb’s Peak 2 Peak Gondola has commenced, with completion of the record breaking lift slated for this December, just before the busy winter season swings into high gear.

Phase one of the two-year construction schedule concluded last November with the two tallest towers completed, and concrete poured for the foundations of the remaining two towers. Phase two has kicked off with the clearing of over 10 feet of snow around the lift terminals to prepare for construction. Access roads have been cleared of snow on Whistler and Blackcomb, and the steel for the towers is being moved into place.

Snowbird Extends Season, Opens Little Cloud Lift

SNOWBIRD, UTAH – With more than 11 feet of snow on the ground at mid-mountain, Snowbird announced today it will extend its season into June and possibly beyond.

Snowbird President Bob Bonar said today he feels confident the resort will be able to offer skiing and riding daily through Sunday, May 11, and then Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through June 1 (including Monday, May 26, Memorial Day).

“With last week’s storm and additional precipitation this week it looks like we’ll have plenty of snow for great skiing through the last weekend of May, beginning of June,” said Bonar. “We will continue to offer skiing and riding as long as the conditions are safe, enjoyable and there’s interest.”

Winter X Games 13 To Be Held January 22-25, 2009

SAVE THE DATE: WINTER X GAMES 13, JANUARY 22-25, 2009

The Winter X Games, the premier winter action sports event in the world, will be held January 22-25, 2009 from Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado. The annual event features athletes from across the globe competing for medals and prize money in the following sports: Skiing, Snowboard and Snowmobile. January 20-21 will serve as practice and elimination days. All Winter X Games competitions will take place at the resort’s Buttermilk Mountain. Winter X Games 13 will air live on ESPN and ABC and will feature nighttime events. The event will remain at Aspen/Snowmass through 2010, for a total of nine consecutive years (2002-2010).
