August 15th 2008 a torrential downpour of rain and low temperatures collided into the state of Colorado bringing an early sign that winter is right around the corner. Over a foot of snow was reported to have fallen in certain Colorado Rocky Mountain zones. Is it all ready time to wax the old snow shredder? Independence Pass and Eisenhower let me in on a lil secret. Another big winter is on the way for CO!

Colorado Resorts Take Steps To Recession Proof Winter Vacations

Colorado Ski Country USA Responds to Airline Baggage Fees, Rising Fuel Prices and Sluggish Economy

Denver, Colo. – August 12, 2008 – In the face of today’s lackluster economy and the rising costs of gas and fuel, Colorado Ski Country USA’s ski resorts have responded with programs and incentives that continue to make Colorado a very attainable and affordable winter getaway destination.

Baggage Fees
A recent trend shows that more guests are traveling with their own boots and choosing to rent skis or snowboards at their destination. Whether to avoid airline baggage fees or opt for ultimate convenience, for the 2008-09 season, travelers who decide to rent equipment rather than travel with their own boots, skis or snowboard have many options.

Pro photographer, Stan Evans, and the man with 28 jobs, Zach Leach, took some time out of their busy schedules to road trip it on their motorcycles from Salt Lake City, UT to Boulder, CO last week. While in the office, Stan hung with Photo Editor, Mike Basher, and reviewed his photos from the season while Zach stayed busy multitasking for a few of his many jobs which include Mervin Manufacturing team/marketing manager, Red Bull team leader, and Oakley pro athlete and product developer. The SNOWBOARD Mag crew just finished production of the Premium Brand Buyers Guide so it was great that Stephen Nilsen (aka Stix) hooked us up with a custom Red Bull cooler to get us thru the grueling deadlines. Good lookin' out Stix!

Eclipse Snow Park Secret Summer Session

Words: Brent Meyer / Photos: Jeff Nass

On June 26th, 2008 a small but select group of riders were invited up to Eclipse Snow Park for the best summer snowboarding Colorado has to offer. Tony Distrola went out of his way this year to make two incredible features amidst 70-degree weather and summer clawing its way into the minds of avid shred fans. This is the second year in a row Eclipse has done a small invite-only summer shoot, which is amazing considering Eclipse currently makes no snow during the winter. The snow is left over from a good winter; it even looks like there is enough to keep riding for weeks to come.

May 24th Pow Day In Silverton

6-8" of fresh in the town of Silverton this morning.

Words/Photos: Ben Eng

Two days ago I was wearing shorts and skating, then BLAM! Mother Nature dropped a bomb in the form of some pow on May 24th. The weather cancelled a major bicycle race from Durango to Silverton, but that just left my friend Matt and I the backcountry to ourselves free from Spandex dorks geeking-up the scene. Our mission was to summit Grand Turk on Molas Pass and descend down into Silverton. Conditions were deep up above treeline, but also very dicey due to the new cold snow sitting on top of frozen sun crust, and varying temps courtesy of the Sun making in-and-out appearances. We triggered a slab in one chute and got stuck riding the exposed crust, but were rewarded with bottomless mid-winter like snow and rooster tails on the next ridge. Down lower in the trees we also witnessed some slow moving wet slides. All in all it was a good taste of the epic season we had this year, and a reminder that it ain't over.

Copper Mountain's Spring Quarter Pipe Sessions

Copper Mountain's Catalyst terrain park crew, along with the help of Snow Park Technologies Frank Wells and Brad Hoerter, built one hell of an insane quarter pipe this spring. A monster standing almost at 35+ feet of tranny. Lauren Pelletreau of the Copper Mountain marketing department extended an invite to me to come over and check it out.

The shred crew consisted of Steve Fisher, Chad Otterstrom, Erich Dummer, James Frederick and C.J. (Seabass a.k.a. The Bass) Marsh. The foto crew, Aaron Dodds and one Jeffrey Potto. And I can't forget to mention Newsroom Cinema's Ms. Justine Gunson. Actually it's Mr. Justin Gunson, on the HD. Big ups to this crew that stood atop the mountain in extreme winds easily pushing 40+ mph, riding and documenting.

College Battle at Echo Mountain

With the season winding down, and so many Colorado Resorts closing, it's easy to get upset. This Saturday, instead of mourning the end of the season, students from colleges all over the state traveled to Echo Mountain for a day of happy shredding and school pride. There were over 70 kids geared up and ready to battle it out. CU Boulder, CU Denver, Colorado State, Western State and Northern Colorado were the represented schools.

The events started at noon in the Asylum tree Park, and the first feature was the log wall-ride. Some people seem to be confused about wall-rides because they ride up and coming strait back down and then look around thinking, “was I supposed to do something?” Luckily, after a few runs everyone had it down. The judges were looking for creativity on this feature, and that’s what they got. There were stalls, spins, falls, and flips, but the winning trick went out to a clean hand plant.
